Hippy,
560 cams, so not too high. I have not taken off covers, yet. Probably tonight. I agree/hope it is just rocker hitting cover. Yes, it seems to be coming from front and not back rocker box. Someone else said timing sounded off, but i do not know what pinging or knocking due to bad timing sounds like.

Hope it's just in the box.
Also, here is some info on clearancing the rocker boxes in the pedia.

I don't buy ignition timing being an issue.
If the timing was totally advanced, it'd be a ticking noise at best and not a knock.
Cam timing would be a concern though.
Did you get any pics of the install to verify they were all lined up?
That'd probably be a hard knock though if you had a valve hitting a piston.
It sounded more of a soft knock to me.
I think I found my mysterious 'every now and then on idle only' soft knock.
The primary chain tension block is loose and was tapping the primary cover lightly.

rode the bike 17 miles to mechanic. rode fine. he said the bike sounded fine, but I was not completely sold. So I rode 15 miles to another mechanic. He listened and immediately said it is the Mikuni HSR 45 carb. He said they all sound like that at idle, and is completely normal and fine. I rode it home. Started researching Mikuni rattle and sure enough there is plenty of discussion on it and how it is normal. Mine sounds just like others that i listened to online. There are videos that show Mikuni's that sound just like mine. I think I am satisfied that I am ok.
thank you for help.

Glad to hear that...
The sound recorded on your post was utterly misleading... better so...

A worn throttle valve seal(#16 in the manual) on the mikuni slide makes that sound. I rebuilt my 42 after 6 or 7 yrs. and that sound diminished.
