Default Crane HI4 ignition question

I am just finishing a complete rebuild of an older Drag Bike using a Buell M2 (Sportster) motor, which has a Crane HI4 ignition. I have never used this ignition before. According to Crane's info, Static Timing is set at TDC. So I assume the ignition module controls the Advance, correct. I would have thought Crane would be able to indicate on the 35 degree mark. Thanks to anyone.

Default Crane HI4 ignition question

Is this the one you are using? I time it at tdc then used the trim port for advancing the spark. I road it for a few yes like that it ran great. I took my bike down to Earl Burley over Burley performance and had him tune and time it. He dynamic timed it and set the advance he also retarded the spark on the rear cylinder to fire at about 22* before tdc if I remember correctly. It ran about the same but he upped the rev limiter some. The trim ports are still set to what he set them to before I removed it from the bike.

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on aftermarket ignitions (with minimal info on Crane) which has some general info about ignitions:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...k:ref:engctl01

And this section about the VOES (which selects between two curves)
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...lectric_switch

This second link also has alot of info about the stock ignition modules, coils, etc.

Ken, been running the Crane in my 2000, I believe S&S bought the Crane ignition some years back. You can double check me on that. If so then maybe add a reference to S.P?

Thanks to all for replies. This motor was running good when I got it although the bike was a disaster. I marked the timing plate and re-installed as it was. Leaving all setting as is since they were correct for Drag racing.
