XLForum, IronHead Forum: What We Do Here

We share our knowledge, experience and opinions. In addition we share friendship, and a love for these classic Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Some of us have formal training in mechanics. Others have a long history of working with IronHeads, having had one "back in the day". Still others are quite new to this.

Everyone should feel free to share their their knowledge, experience and opinions, even those who are new. One way to learn stuff is to post something that you believe to be helpful and correct, only to discover after reading the responses that you were wrong! Hhhmmmm, i wonder how i know this, eh!

When you get a response to a posted question it may be best to wait a day or so before following whatever advice or directions are given. The responder may be sharing their best experience, but there may be better yet to come.

Occasionally we disagree rather dramatically in our opinions. When you encounter an opinion with which you disagree, or perhaps one which may offend you, you should carefully consider your response. Consider these ideas:
  • Respond the to idea, not to the person who posted the idea.
  • If you are going to throw fuel on the fire you will have to accept the consequences; sometimes it is best to simply read and move on.
  • Always show respect for the other person.

Yes. My intention is to put it up with the announcements. I want to wait for a while to see what responses it gets first. I may change some things depending on what comes thru here.

Great idea. Milmat1 also put together a kind of general 'Getting Started on the Forum' thread and Bert put it at the top of the Sportster Motorcycle General Discussion and Problems forum. It give new riders an easy to find place to get basic advice like 'buy a manual', 'keep good records', 'how to perform basic maintenance', etc. You should check it out:

New to Harleys or Bikes in General, Read this.

I really like the advice that your intro gave on posting and ettiquette.

Et moi, aussi! Sometimes we need to be reminded of what etiquette works the best on this forum and others.

Having said that, I have really been impressed with how level-headed some of the members of this forum are.

I certainly agree with that. If you grew up in a large family or were ever a part of a 'brotherhood', this forum brings back memories. Tempers may flare, but at the end of the day the members are supportive and hold no grudges.
