Default Primary drain plug options

Im in the process of mounting a 1979 ironhead motor into an after market hardtail frame. Seems to me like I am not going to be able to access the primary drain plug enough to remove for oil changes. Is there a way to use something...some other way to remove the oil? Think fancy turkey baster!

You need to change the primary oil only once a year so a bit of inconvenience is not so bad.

You can use a drill pump ...

Cost about $20 maybe less. Attach a hose at each end input and output, attach your electric drill, ...

Some guys just remove the primary cover and tilt the bike a bit.

79 has the primary chain adjuster thru the primary cover - might be able to drain it there. I do not as i have not tried it. Remove the nylock nut, remove the stud, ...

Perfect. So with a tube attached and placed in through primary inspection hole, I should be able to reach most of the oil?

Or a Liquivac. I picked one up at Ace Hardware and it works great.

Isn't there a primary oil level check plug on the 79? Pull it lean the bike and let it drain out for 10 minutes.

I am not familiar with the 79s does it have a drain for the trans and a drain for the primary as well? Unless your frame has a belly pan welded on you should still be able to access the trans drain plug. If not it would still be a simple matter to drop the primary cover and draining it that way while you have the cover off drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the cover for a plug for future use (not that I would personally do this).

The high pressure safety valve is critical when removing primary fluid from your lower unit.
