Default My take on the world ~ Photo by Trace

Hi all,
I thought I'd start a thread for my other hobby; my photography. I've been sharing for the past few years in the Art Photography & Design thread, but after giving it some thought decided I'd start my own thread so that I can add stories where applicable.

Mostly I take landscapes. My photos are often a somewhat surreal take on the world; not really reflecting what we see most of the time; but more the way I'd like for it to be In addition to my landscapes, usually when I go to an event I'll also take some spontaneous people photos and sometimes cars and bikes too. There's always likely to be dog photos in the mix too.

I'm actually going to start with some photos I took from my recent trip to the US and just update whenever I get out with my camera and get some decent shots to share.

Hope you enjoy my take on the world

My recent roadtrip started with a request to visit Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia. Dan was obliging... when we rolled into the park it was close to dark and the sky was dark and threatening. No sooner had we unloaded the bikes and the rain started tumbling. That put paid to my intent to take a quick look at the falls to get an idea of where I'd like to head at first light the next morning. We did brave the nearby lookout over the canyon though and I thought it could well be very pretty in the morning if there was any fog after the rain.
At first light the next morning we headed to Elakala Falls... it turned out that it was a good choice- we certainly weren't disappointed. While the path to the foot of the falls had been mostly washed out and the effects of Sandy were still apparent, we climbed downed trees and made our way down to the falls. What met us was peace and natural beauty. Below are my two favourite photos from that morning by the falls.

On the walk back through the forest I very much enjoyed the play of light through the canopy and captured a few close-ups...

The morning ended overlooking the Blackwater Falls canyon as the sun was breaking through the clouds and the fog was starting to lift.

After the Boyer forum meet the next few days consisted of heading further south to the Dragon. Our twisties riding was interspersed with waterfalls. The Tail of the Dragon Waterfall map provided a basis from which to explore. And of course no road in that part of the world could possibly disappoint. Here are some of my favourites from those few days. These photos were all taken in the middle of the day; so not the best light for waterfalls, but it was a really fun few days finding and exploring between lots of good riding.

Bald River Falls off the Cherohala Skyway

Cullasaja River. I could have sat in this spot for hours. Just beautiful.

Upper rapids of the Cullasaja Falls. We had fun climbing down to both these rapids and then further down to the base of the falls. The adventure included a very near "drop" of Dan's 1200R while doing a U-turn to get back to the access to the falls; my first encounter with poison ivy; a roadside shower under a waterfall (to wash off said poison ivy); and falling flat on my ass on slippery rocks. And of course a couple of photos to help remember it all by

Dan behind Dry Falls. Not only did we get damp from the falls, but this is when the heavens decided to open and our wet gear came back out for the remainder of the afternoon.

Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest. Screaming, splashing kids don't go with waterfalls in my mind... but they did this day. They were having a ball shrieking and playing in the swimming hole at the base of the falls. Hope to get back to this spot one day.

If all of your photos are 1/2 as nice as these, this is going to be a great thread. Well done!

I LOVE the Blue Ridge Parkway! I wish I could take a two-week holiday camping on the parkway with my camera in hand to record the many "faces" it has. Actually make that a two-week holiday each season to catch each of its different looks too!
Here are just a few photos. I could easily make lots of stops along the parkway...

Otter Creek

From the Ridge Region; though not sure exactly where... maybe this is humpback rocks??

And just loving the curves

These are beautiful... you are a very talented photographer! Since I live near the BRP in Virginia, I especially enjoyed those. Keep 'em coming... subscribed. Brian

Back home... a very foggy morning. Fog is one of the things I've missed since moving to the tropical north. We really only get maybe four or five heavy fogs a year, so I was glad to get out amongst this one for a couple of photos.

I'd actually gone in search of a paddock of ghost gums, but the place I'd had in mind was too close to the ocean and was lacking any fog. So I came back inland and got the bonus of this roo. He was being reasonably cautious but stayed long enough for me to get a couple of photos before he retreated further into the fog.
