Watch out on a pipe thread, because they're a taper and over tightening may crack your carb. Try a little PTFE pipe dope, or a bit of teflon tape.

Grease nipples are another option to try and work out your thread size and pitch

simplified pipe thread info for the garage guy.

pipe threads come either straight (nps) or tapered (npt).

both are based on the pipe outside diameter as follows:
1/8 pipe = .405 pipe dia.
1/4 pipe = .540 dia.
3/8 pipe = .675 dia.

the above sizes are the major dia of the male straight thread (as the pipe od is the major).
and
major dia. of tapered male thread at its big end (if fitting is made to the americian standard).
the tapered thread has diameter reduced on a taper of .0625 per inch of thread length.

almost all hardware store fittings will be tapered thread.
------------------------------------------------

little known fact:
all iron heads pipe threads used in cases, rocker boxes, and oil pumps are straight female thread, fitted with tapered thread male fittings.

this is a common automotive practice when dealing with low pressure apps.

Canadian tire has their own name brand tap/die set on sale this week. It is $39.99 regular $149.99. It is not a professional quality set but it is good enough for the garage mechanic and being the mastercraft name it has a lifetime warranty. I use it for cleaning threads, re-tapping stripped threads for the next size and determining what size nut/bolt I need to get for lost and broken bolts etc. I've had no problems with mine and I use it fairly regularly.

I wouldn't normally endorse this because it is manufactured overseas but for a builder with a budget it worth it.
