Peanut tank changes early 90s?
Just realized why my sporty never seemed to have that exact "old sportster" look to me. My bike is a 94 and the fuel petcock is on the left side, which where i've read it should be on the right. Now looking on google it looks like there are two different 2.2 peanuts?
This is what mine looks like. (Not my bike or pic) Notice where the tank ends in the back in relation to the rear rocker cover
The tanks with the valve on the right hand side look shorter!
Look at where the back of the tank ends in relation to the rear rocker cover in both pictures, huge difference.
Are they both 2.2 gallons? Can't be. I always thought (from the factory) that there was only one style of the flat bottom 2.2 peanut.

Mine looks like the second pick, petcock is on the left. The king sportster tank holds a little more than 3 gallons, that's probably what you have? I switched from a king that came on a 2001 to the smaller peanut tank.

Jeff is exactly right. The longer tank in the top pic is a King tank, 3.3 or 3.5 gal.

I wasn't aware that they made a 3.3 that still had the flat bottom.
It was to my belief that before 96, all sportsters had the same 2.2 peanut since the ironhead days, save minor differences in mounting and petcock location.
Was this a factory option? Some pre 96 bikes came with the 2.2 and some with this flat bottom king tank?

I think they switched the petcock to the left side in 1992. My 1991 came new with it on the right side. My FSM shows a different number for the 1992 tank vs. my 1991 tank as well. For 1994 it should have been on the left side stock.
Your tank looks like the 3 gal tank, I forget what they called it back then, but it was an option. My buddy had one one his 1200.

The 1200 got the 3.3 a year before the 883. My 2.2 is off a '94 883 and still has the petcock on the right

Interesting. Somewhere in its life someone must of changed the tank to one that happened to be the same exact color. My bike was built in late 93 so I doubt it could of came with a 95 tank from new.
This is mine

That's your bike - right? - That _IS_ the crimped edge model 3.25gal tank like used on the 1995 model 1200s...
However, that king tank was available as a 'primer only' replacement tank and I'm sure it was available through the P&A catalog for awhile...
So, it may have been obtained after the original 2.25gal tank was damaged and painted to match...
If 1995 offered the same colors ( ), then it's likely to have come from a 1995 production bike - Do you know whether it has an original HD paint sticker on the bottom?
