Great info on the Harley fork oil in the SportsterPedia!
Internet info seems to be all over the place on viscosity

I have some additional information I've found recently.

The HD parts/accessory web site in the Type E fork oil has an answer in the Q&A with the viscosity at 40 C / 100 F listed.

ISO 3448 Viscosity class ISO VG 46

ISO VG 46 = SAE 15

I contacted Dave at Red Line about which Red Line fluid to use to replace HD Type E.

His reply:
the Harley type B is just slightly higher viscosity than the Medium, the type E is about 20% higher.
The mix ratio to match the HD type E viscosity at 100°F would be about 75% RL Medium and 25% RL Heavy Suspension Fluid.


I made a chart of the HD Type E (using the viscosity info I found), the RL 75/25 mix and the RL Medium and RL Heavy at viscosity at temps from 0 C (32 F) to 55 C (131 F).

I will probably send Blackstone a sample of HD Type E for analysis.
I will also request the viscosity at 100 F (40 C) to have actual data.

The TDS / SDS info from the manufs is not even consistant.
This is the info I got from the HD website 3 years ago:

Technically the viscosity of the "B" and the "F" fork oils is proprietary info.
What I can tell you is that the weight for the "B" is between 0-10 and the "F" is between 5-20.


I'd take things with a grain of salt until it's tested.

That is interesting that the type E fork oil was answered, kinda.
Then the next answer is "we can't tell you that".
41.4-51.6 puts E in 15 ish wt class judging from other brands.
HD doesn't make the base oil. So, I vaguely compared 40C to others.
I'll add this to the narrative also.

I'd like to get the facts on type B and E.
You're right, all over the map depending on which manufs website you're on.
Me thinks there's an 'out of work' car salemen club that invaded the fork oil business.
Ours matches HD at .....

The chart is good, but it would be more useful with more of a variety of brands.

I'd like to see the Blackstone analysis of type E and B.

I did find a mention of Harley Davidson Fork oil type E on a Citgo web page but no information or SDS. It did indicate a 20W weight.
It also listed Harley Special Motor oil 20w-50, HD 240 / 360 10w-40, 20w-50, 50 and 60 and HD Special transmission oil.

I have an 82 XLHA that has the right case cracked or busted at the countershaft, I realize the cases have to be split to repair, who can do this, I would like to fix it since I also have the matching 82 XLSA, thanks for any help, advise, Larry

Larry,
I've seen that repair in threads on the forum.
But I'm not sure who to take it to.
A good welder obviously but I believe there may be considerations to be made when doing so.
If you'll post that question in the IH forum, I'll bet some of those guys can get you on the right path.
This is all we have in the Sportsterpedia on transmission case repair but it mainly deals with older cases.

First off thanks much for the Sporsterpedia, a great resource. Did want to let you know of a minor error I spotted in the Evo forks section. It states that the drain screws are Phillips head and they are actually JIS and marked as such with a dot. It is very easy to strip the head of a JIS screw using a Phillips screwdriver and this has caused much grief working on Japan sourced bikes and parts. If you don't have JIS drivers in a pinch you can grind a bit off the tip of a Phillips driver or bit and it will fit a JIS screw much better.
