I had a problem with the oil seal behind the front sprocket leaking. I replaced it 3 times before i found the actual problem.

The oil seal must be pushed well into the holder before it is installed. I assumed that the process of screwing the holder into place would push the seal in. For good measure i put a little Permatex Ultra Blue sealant in the holder; but this should not be necessary.

I have 51/23. "Everyone" uses this combination or it's equivalent. Good acceleration. Significantly reduced vibes at hiway speeds.

I tried 49/23; was useless.

Thanks.
I was asking when You installed the 23t in Your 1980, is that what caused the leak..if so, I need to buy a new seal?
I'm half dyslexic..

You do not need to remove the oil seal and the oil seal retainer to switch the sprockets. If it is not leaking then i would not replace it. I might have a new spare on hand tho.

The first time i replaced the front sprocket i needed a puller to remove the old one. On subsequent times it just came off easily.

Yep,it took a puller. And the seal was just barley sealing..less than a 1/4 " the seal wasn't shoved in all the way into the holder from the factory. All good now, and I like the gearing! New tires/bearings and I guess Im good to go on trip!
