Default Year model HELP.

OK I'm putting my neck on the line to sound like a real dummy. I just bought this 1968 XLH and the guy I bought it from said it was a 1000cc. After doing some internet research I am unable to find any info on a "1968 XLH1000". So my question is;
"Do I have a 1968 XLCH900?"

any help would be great. Thanks

Look at the numbers stamped on the motor, Then cross reference in the Factory manual. That will give you the year of the motor. '71 or earlier makes it a 900 (883), '72 & later is 1000 (997.5)

Here is a site that will help you determine what you have. It only goes back to 1970 but if the motor has been changed it may still help out.

All sportsters were 883cc until 1972 when they went to 1000cc. If it is truly a '68 xlh motor it would have been 883cc stock, but maybe a previous owner bored it out.

Yup it's definately a 900. I spoke with the guy who sold it to me and he said it was bored out to "about" a 1000.

To turn a 55 into a 61 you have to change cylinders/pistons/heads..

I dont know if you have to bore the cases....

Boring wont make it happen

I had a '69 900 that I liked except the clutch sucked....never really in or out...

I hear ya. I'm experiencing that with my clutch as we speak. I've been trying to tweek it and just can't get it the way I want it. Man! and I thought it was me!

Check to see if the clutch studs are bent.

They are a 1/4-20..1/4-28 stud that i was only able to find at HD. Back in '95 they were $3.00 apiece. Cost me almost $20 but it helped somewhat...
