Default Skulls and bullets junk

I think owning a big bike and getting to ride it is a pretty cool thing. You are not only enjoying the sheer pleasure of motorcycling but you also get a chance to express some individuality and personality in an increasingly homogenised and restrictive society.

Then there is the childish off-the-shelf and formulaic tat which some people stick on their bikes; particularly I mean skulls and bullets.

I assume what people mean by adding this junk is: “Look, I’m a rebel with a macabre streak and I endorse gun crime too”. What actually comes across is: “Look, I’m a slightly sad person with little personality of my own so I have decided to buy into some off-the-shelf”.

There is nothing cool or individualistic about buying the same junk as lots as others and pretending an allegiance to a theme or way of life that you clearly do not have. It’s all part of the same mass self-delusion that leads people to pay more for goods with particular conspicuous labelling, such as sportswear and handbags.

Just look at the really cool bikes. Depending on your taste they are either the personally customised ones with cool paint jobs or, my personal preference, tastefully and simply improved machines with functional additions, often in simple black/silver.

So I’m starting my own little movement for people to stop buying all the silly HD, Kuryakyn, etc tasteless junk and sticking it on their bikes in the misguided assumption it improves the bike and/or their own image.

Just say NO to skulls and bullets!

I guess I'm a slightly sad person with very little personality and there is nothing cool about me. I am by no means an individual in any way. I didn't know that I am a macabre person but I guess I could be... or not. I'll try to be better. But really... I don't care... ... Tee

The "childish off-the-shelf and formulaic tat" which I chose has flames on it! Does that mean I'm cool, or do I also lack a personality? I MUST know this...do I need to hurry home and put my stock stuff back on before my individuality is gone for good? Perhaps I should rattle-can it black...I'm so confused!!!!!!

The guru says:

You are borderline with flames. If custom-sprayed and tastefully done then you are OK. If they are cheap stick-ons or bought as an item from HD then you are naughty and will be spanked.

I hope you're able to see the contradiction between the two quotes above.

As I wrote recently "a bike is just something you buy, it can't make you cool".

I sympathise with your position. (To a large extent I agree with everything you said.) However, I'd be careful not to apply it too broadly. While there are certainly a lot of people who try to accessorize their way to a particular image, not everyone who puts skulls and/or bullet holes on their bike thinks it makes them look cool, because not everyone takes themselves that seriously in the first place.

Why in the world would you be worrying about the skulls on my bike ?

If I have problems, they are mine , not yours

I've personally never understood the skulls thing. I wouldn't look down on people with them, but I'd never have the creepy things on my bike.

Bullets, now... I'm heavily into shooting and gun collecting so I tend to like those. In fact, my ultimate customization plan is to have my tanks and fenders stripped, polished and 'blued' with black oxide and some engraving.
