Not sure if it's relevant or not, but 2005 was also the last year for straight cut gears in the transmission.

My 2007 has a black motor, so that's incorrect.

I thought all the r's had black motors, and Did you wanna note that 04 was the first rubber mount?

I could be wrong, but, I think the 2006-Newer had the black engines, and the earlier R's had gray ones.

Correct, they were silver in 2005. See link below.
Also, They changed the axle size in 2005. Says here they went from .75 to 1 inch in 05.

Yup rubbermount and axle change already on the Sportster.org list (at least I think so, I'll double-check). Yup the 1200Rs were gray motors, then moved to black...
