Default tach drive

Got home the other day and found brown stuff run down and back on my cam cover. Its coming out of the tach drive. Looks and feels like rusty water. Doesnt really have an oily feel. I've ridden in the rain numerous times, but have had the cable disconnected and reconnected since then and there was no sign of water in cable. Tach works great. Is there a seal in the tach drive that could have gone and forced old rust up and out of the unit? Does this mean the unit needs replacing? Is there a way to clean it and relubricate it?

I do not know what is actually happening there. However the tach drive is quite simple. It can be removed, cleaned, inspected, re-installed without disturbing other parts. There should be a paper gasket between it and the case. I have recently seen a post here where a copper washer was used. I would think a white "plastic" [or whatever] washer would also do. Anything that will seal.

OK. Its got a gasket between it and the case. Couldnt really tell where it was leaking at, at the base or at the top where the cable ties into it. The whole drive was covered with the wet rusty looking stuff and it run down and back on the cover. But it still works, so..
