Fuel Reserve?
I've got an 05 883 and i have run out of gas twice. there's no fuel light on my bike, it's got the little knob that i turn to reserve. however, when i ran out of gas and turned it to reserve i got nothing. so the next time i rode i turned it to reserve and after a while of driving my bike started sputtering and died like it was out of gas and when i turned it to "ON" it started up again? anybody know why my reserve isn't working?

Sure you turned it the right way?
Is it on res all the time?
If not the petcock has a screen on the end that may have came off. The screen regulates the level at which the the fuel is at reserve.

Yup - also, when you ran out, how much gas did you put in?
If I remember correctly we'd normally put about 2.5 gallons or so in once it hit reserve (at about 100-120 miles).
If we ran it ALL The way down ON reserve it would take more like 3.1-3.2 gallons (and be closer to 140-150 miles).

There was a recall (or a tech bulletin or something) for some bikes (early '05?) which had the petcock marked the wrong way between 'on' and 'reserve'.

I'll have a look when I get home; I may have a copy of it.

Easy thing to check. Pull your fuel line off and see when gas comes out. But, the screen has nuttin to do with reserve. There are different height feed tubes for main and reserve.

All the below applies to the 04 1200 Roadster.
If I remember correctly (at my age, it's getting questionable) the petcock has three positions: ON, OFF, RES.
Assuming you are using all three positions, then there is something wrong with the petcock. If you are mechanically inclined, the next time you get 80+ miles on the tank, take it off, tilt it on the right side, and carefully remove the petcock. (Listen for noise that indicates parts falling off.) Inspect for damage.
Below are pix of the petcock in various stages of disassembly:

Filter still on

Filter loose

Filter off - showing where tube sits in petcock
It's kind of hard to see in the pix, but there are 2 holes. One (to the right in this pix) gets the tube shown coming out of the bottom of the filter. The other hole is for reserve. I just checked and the filter does not fit backwards.
So, check it (or have the dealer/favorite indy check) for a filter that may have come loose or off. Else you have some other issue. (While I was getting this together, the post about the recall comes in... well, it wasn't something I repeated this time. )

That's only going to work if the fuel's down to the reserve level. And only with a vacuum applied.
