Default Carb ???

Help me decide on a carb for my 79 Ironhead. I will be running stock cams and want reliabilty for daily riding more than excess power.

Ive been reading about S&S, Mikuni, CV, Bendix, and SU.

Help me pick one.

I'm thinking that in 79 Keihin was still OEM. Help me on this mick.
I have S&S on my rides. I have had good look with Mikuni's.
A bendix is an old oem carb. I have used them but they can flood easily. Also they have a bowl vent that can overflow at the darndest time.
I can say this for S&S they still support (sell parts for) their early carbs. I don't know if that is important to you but in my case my carbs are 30 years old.

You can pick up a cv take off on ebay pretty cheap and they work nice on the ironheads. You just have to buy a adapter to make them fit.

(Temp. runs around 165-180 degrees in town and 180- 210 degrees on the freeway running 70-90mph and it uses no oil in between 3000 mile changes.) GPS calibrated speedometer.

I'm pretty sure the stock carb was a keihin butterfly in '79.

'79 had a Keihin fixed venturi (butterfly, non-CV.) If I were picking a carb for an ironhead, I would pick a CV because takeoffs are cheap and plentiful, parts are cheap and plentiful and it works pretty well all the way around. If I had to rank them:
  1. CV
  2. Stock Keihin (new, not worn out)
  3. Mikuni HSR42 or HS40 (more $$ than CV, better throttle response than S&S)
  4. S&S E (more $$ than CV)
  5. Bendix (new, not worn out)
  6. SU (really don't like these, the original CV )

I have had good luck with the S&S, set it and forget it. However they are expensive and others on this forum have stated that the CV performs well and can be had for much less $.

Sounds like I need a 1993-2006 factory take-off. Are they all the same during those years?

Please tell me about the needed adapter. Is there a part number for it?
