Default Mud Flap vs. Fishtail

Have noted of late while perusing the catologue, HD offers mudflaps. This is not out-of-the-ordinary, but does bring up another problem......today's poor design.

Old school, when quality was foremost over profit margin and costs were not cut to facilitate satisfying the quarterly stock market report, rear mudflaps had a hidden brace to maintain the shape of the fender.

I could have opted for the $20.00 rear flap with the clash of an ostentatious orange and white logo, but the ugly "fishtail" looked even more ridiculous than spending more for materials and time to create my own.

The results warranted the effort and additional expense....$25.00 and 8 hours of labor (two evenings).

If interest beckons, will post a photo of the finished work, tomorrow, which includes a hand-carved logo.

I dig mudflaps. Yours is the first I've seen on the forum besides mine. Good job, looks nice.

Looks like quality workmanship. Nice touch with the Harley logo.

A full shot of the bike would be nice.

FYI If you want to see "Dogbunny's" bike pictures, just click on his post where it says "My XLF Gallery". Needless to say his rear mudguard is unique.

Okay, but you might not like what you see...

This is a vintage bicycle mud flap that I got on eBay. I didn't know how goofy it would be in person. Nonetheless, it helps keep my engine and ankles clean.

This is an old bike that I ride every day and never wash. It is kind of funky, and the goofy flap fits.

I like mud flaps because:
1: They help keep you and your bike clean.
2: They set you apart. When everyone else is bobbing, this is an easy way to make your fender longer.

This is another bicycle mudflap that I got mail order, but this one is modern, not vintage. Since taking this pic, I decided I have too much red, so now the mud flap is off. I now have a tool bag at the bottom of the forward frame tubes that sort of acts as a flap.
BTW, the squirrel's ass finally died of natural causes, which I'm sure many are happy to hear. I may resurrect that some day.
