Default Sporty tank fitment

Does anyone know what the deal is on the fuel tank fitment for '86-'03 Sportys?

I was told one of the changes was in '95, what's the difference?

Are the factory 883 and 1200s, for most years, basically the same tank? I've also heard differnt people give me all number of different capacity for the same tank. Some people say stock is 2.25 gallon, some say 2.4. There's also a 3.3 which I think came stock on some years.

I see a lot of tanks being advertized as "sportster/bobber" tanks but when I ask if it'll work as a replacement for my tank I'm being told no.

Also, isn't it relatively easy to make any tank work on any bike? I assume the length will affect where the mounting brackets should be and where the seat stops. Appreciate if someone knows or knows where to find this info.

No change for 95' that I know of. Wait petcock changed from right to left.
Tanks fit 82' to 03'.
82' to 94' petcock right.
95' to 03' petcock left.
97' to 03' came factory with a 3.2 smooth king.
04' and up models require a 04' up tank.
If tank is not listed to fit a 2004-up model - rear tank mount will need to be modified / fabricated to fit your bike.

Standard tanks can run from the stock that came on bike 2.25gal to 2.4gal for after market.

King tanks can run from 3.1 to 3.3.

Here's a link for 94' XLH1200's gas tanks at J&P

My stock tank 2.25gal's

My King tank smooth bottom 3.3gal's

Both for comparison.

You can see that the king is longer, look at the rear mount. Also is wider & taller.
King fits snug to the seat and even crunches it in a little.

In 1995 they changed the size of the filler neck - I have two OEM 2.25 tanks, manufactured just months apart, and they use different size caps. The other consideration is the location of the petcock. The ones I have are on the left.

In 95' when the petcock was moved to the left they also moved the ignition switch to the neck.
My bike is a 94' with a 95' tank on it.

wow, thanks for the info.

I didn't realize the 2.25 tank looked so small in comparison.

I guess mines 3.2. I was looking at my options for replacing it and was thinking of going with the 2.25.

Beware of the tunnel width. I bought an older Sporty tank to put on my 87' and the tunnel was too small.

Do you remember what year tank you bought?

Also, does anyone know of any aftermarket tanks that have the old school shape you see on a lot of the hardtails. Its a more rounded shape that would fit my stock mount locations?

I think tanks from '82 - '03 have the same mounting locations. The mounting ears are different when they went to rubber mounting grommets - maybe in 1995, so the holes are larger. As stated earlier, the petcock migrated from one side to the other, and the larger 3.3 tank won't work with some seats.
