I'm thinking of some better cams for next year. This bike pulls like crazy till almost 6 grand than kinda falls on its face a bit and pops and farts at higher prm. It wants very lean jetting, 28 pilot and a 70 main in order to make those piddly little rpms. It won't rev and pops bad with a 74 or bigger jet. What do you think?
Test your valvesprings. It might be lift off causing the pops.
Bought my engine new from S&S. After break in I went to the dyno. I discovered that the power curve dropped abrubtly just above 6000 rpm with the stock S&S600 cam. I pulled off the heads. The valve spring tester indicated that the stock triple S&S valvesprings had lost around 30% of pressure after just one season. Spring seats and keepers showed signs of valve float. Hammered.

I changed to CompCams springs, seats and retainers and the engine pulled all the way to my rev limit at 7000.
You might have the same kind of bad quality S&S springs.

Both S&S 550 and S&S 600 pulls to 7000 rpm. But after 6000 rpm they are over the top.

The 89" is a stroker kit.

They don't like to be revved too much more than 6000 RPM. (has to do with piston speed)

There's a thread around here that can go more into detail about it.

Smokin, what kind of #'s are you putting out with that 89"?

Sorry I have not had it on a dyno yet. I had one chance this year and the dyno was down. It is about a four hour drive to get there again. It is suppsed to put out about 85 of each and make power to about 7 grand. I limit it at 65 and usually respect the stock redline of 62.
It is a "short stroke" stroker 89 inch but it is a 3 5/8s big bore too. The old evo 89s were a longer stroke cuz they kept a 3 1/2" bore.

I plan to dyno test the bike with the custom grind Andrews cam set soon. Then change to the RS615 cams and run them in the dyno too. In order to select the cam I like best. If no clear winner can be found, I might continue testing some dual pattern combinations. For example RS615 on the intake and S&S600 on the exhaust.

I actually talked to Bob Woods today about 4 spd XL cams.

He has no problem making them, and tailoring them to your engine configuration. A bit high on the price (around $550 USD) and a couple weeks lead time to make them.. But he will make them, and suggest cam specs based on what you're looking to achieve.

Hello again!

Since our conversation I have dynoed my bike with a custom grind cam set and with the RS615.

Problem is that I have lost around 20 rwhp and experience around 2 AFR units cyl to cyl unbalance with both cams. (Quite similar specified intake closing and duration on intake & exh.)

I'm not at all conviced that the cams are causing this.

But anyway I decided to degree the RS615:s thats in the engine now.

Result:

Cyl1 Intake: Retarded 2 degrees
Cyl1 Exhaust: Retarded 3½ degrees

Cyl2 Intake: Retarded 5 degrees
Cyl2 Exhaust: According to spec, perfect

So I have to join Stinkfoots impressions in this thread, regarding the timing of these cams.
I'm convinced that this is not the reason to the powerloss and uneven AFR, but apart from that. Do you (or other experienced members) have any opinions on these results? I think that 5 degrees off spec retard is to much, at least in my case, since I just have 10.7:1 and the rev limiter @ 7000rpm.

Hi Jorge, Not sure what to make of the situation, but I think something else i going on. Based on my understanding, having the intake lobe retarded from the spec on the cam card would result in moving the powerband to the right compared to what is intended. This should not have resulted in less power, certainly not that much less. While the cam timing is not what was specified, something else is going on. Wish i could be of more help, but at the moment I am at a loss. Steve

Thanks

Yes I agree, this cam problem cant be causing the powerloss and uneven AFR.

But since I happened to discover these timing deviations during my trouble shooting I was just wondering If I should accept this intake retard. I think that I should adjust it, in order to keep up the cranking pressure. I would have accepted +-2 degrees deviation from spec, especially 2 degrees advance
