Default Starter trouble!

I´m from Sweden and i have a 1972 Ironhead with a prestolite starter!
My trouble began about a week ago when the solenoid gave up.
I bought a repair kit and change the plate and the cover, then it worked again..
But after a a few starts the solenoid gave up again, the plate from the repair kit was loose and shorten the solenoid and my new battery
I phoned the company that sold me the repair kit and they send me a new solenoid.
I change the solenoid but i didn´t work, the starter just spinning and the pinion gear don´t move out like it should.
I have checked the cables for shorts and i have a new battery so nothing is wrong there.
One thing i begin to suspect is the pinon gear, when i move it on the axel
it locks up some times on the splines.
But to remove the pinion axel i must remove the clutch shell, so i hope someone can give me a tip.

Sounds to me like you are on the right track. When I need a new starter on my 68 I change boots

superwarden: Yeah, it´s better to just change boots than starter
Soon it´s winter here in Sweden and then i´m going to add a Kickstarter axle.

Yeah some days I wish I had the electric though, when there are lots of witnesses and she won't fire!
