Thanks for pointing it out. Maybe 3 quarts takes it to the top of the dipstick, thus a bit less than 3 quarts is a decent fill.

BTW the transmission is separate and some riders use auto trans fluid in the primary, if it is suitable for a wet clutch.

Dont worry about that trans buddy!! I have been beating on my 1200's for three years now with no problems (just a clutch) Just keep the fluid changed and the primary chain adjusted. I personally run mobile 1 full syn 20/50 in my nightster and in my wifes Buel xb9. Engine and primary, I also change it religiously every 2500 miles. Just my .02 Have fun!!

ATF would work great, but you would most likely not be happy with the extra gear noise from the tranny that the thin ATF may cause in a sportster transmission

My question was what was it that H-D sold under the Sport Trans Fluid label?

Too thin??? 7 weight ATF is not too thin??? Really??

Sport trans hasn't been made for quite some time now, what?? 2004????

Last I checked SportTrans fluid was a 75-90 gear oil suitable for wet clutch applications.


These oil threads....they really never go anywhere, do they?
