Well its the calm before the storm here so to speak in sunny old Brisbane Australia!!. We had a fair old storm yesterday and high tide around 1.30pm we had a bit of local flooding. This afternoon we are expecting a king tide around 3pm and combined with water release from our main catchment dam (its currently at 190% capacity) we are apparently going to see levels that may surpass the 1974 floods here :censor . Thursday is expected to be our main problem day, i'm good at home, nice and high .. ..i helped some friends move some gear and personal belongings into my shed last night, and may have a guest or two sleeping on the lounge chairs for a few nights. I work at the local airport, its looking like we may have to pull an all nighter to keep an eye on things and make sure power and lights are on the runway, but working on our predictions we should be right . . .clouds are out on the horizon again, so hopefully that stays back for a bit. .. fingers crossed!!
Here's some pics of yesterday, i'll update with some more if we see worse in the next few days

Keep that Ironhead above the waterline mate. Wouldn't want to get all that new chrome messed up!
Bet you are having fun out at the airport. I see it is still open but you have to wonder for how long?
I was supposed to go to Brisbane but I don't think that is going to be happening by the look of things.

WTF is that bike and sidecar in your flood pics? MZ??

Best of luck with the high tide this arvo mate.

That snake is not having a good day.

Hope everyone down there comes out of this OK.

When I look at these pictures I can't help but think of a commercial from an Australian beer company (Fosters?): "From Australia - the driest continent on Earth".

Prayers up.

More flood news on the Brisbane newspaper website here

http://www.couriermail.com.au/

They are saying it will get worse in the next 24 hours with a king tide at 4am backing up floodwaters even more.

That is the bizarre thing, we just had 10 years of drought, record dry years etc and Brisbane last year built seawater desalination plants to supply the city with water. Now it is under water.

We will be right mate . . .runway is at 5.43AHD . . .its going to take a bit to stop us!! . . although linking taxiways, some sub stations and remote gensets are a little low for our liking :doh . The 77 is high and dry, checked on her last night, yeh don't know what that old bike is . .silly bugger, looks like his Mrs was giving him a tongue lashing!!. Give me a yell if you come down, we will catch up for a beer in the terminal :cheers

My income insurance company wanted me to fly down to Brisbane on Friday to see their doctor but I don't think that is going to be happening by the look of things.

We have just passed our 3pm peak tide period here and have pulled through fairly unscathed in the lower end of the river. I'm heading home and have a 2 am start in preparation for the next 4am peak tide. . .tomorrow is when the real peaks will hit us as it takes 36 hours for the water released from the main dam to reach us at the mouth of the river . . .over n out from a soggy Brisbane :wonderlan

Latest news from Brisbane:

Castlemaine XXXX says the brewery is safe and dry and large quantities of beer are in storgae on high ground so Queensland will not face a beer shortage.:clap

Government urges residents to conserve (tap) water as there is a water shortage, due to the floods. :doh

.Sadly, though, there are still about 70 people missing. The way those rivers are raging out to sea, I'm guessing many will never be found.

Looks like i'll be at work until about 6-7pm when we pass this next peak and then off to bed, X fingers i may score Friday off work for the extra time i've put in here this week . .man this has been the longest drawn out week i think i've ever had

I was down near the mouth of the river yesterday Hopper, rescue boats were struggling to power upstream, the cops nabbed three wankers trying to steal abandoned boats overnight

Just looking at the coverage on TV as the tide peaked about an hour ago, and what a mess. It is going to be a clean up of Hurricane Katrina proportions in Brisbane alone, then there is all the outlying towns.

Scumbag looters there with the boats, Russ. Shooting on sight is too good for 'em. Reports of looting in Bundy too. They better hope no one catches them, they'll get strung up in Bundy.

If you look closely you will see that even the wildlife help each other in a crisis!!
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll65/russzx6/resizeraspx.jpg

We are forming a volunteer group here at work to firstly help our own work mates with whatever skills each of us have, and my work is donating the use of any of our current equipment plus $50K to be split up however we determine its best used. So once the waters recede over the next few days hopefully we will be into it

you have a knack for catching wildlife on film - you should consider working for national geographic!

Keep it running

Gee, what do you say? Hope the troubles are behind ya'll and life is starting to get closer to normal. Or at least inching in that direction.
It's amazing this forum. We have never met and probably won't, but after reading your comments and about these bikes it puts someone I "know" in the floods. Small world after all.
Really do wish all of you well.
And 4x beer, have to try one one day.
Cheers

You folks are tough, no kidding. I love the "save the beer" shots. Of course, this is really sensible. The first thing to disappear in a flood is drinking water since the treatment plants become non-funcitonal. Lots of water, just none of it safe for drinking. Beer is a good alternative.

To all the guys in Brisbane and Queensland I hope that all works okay for you all.

Been watching these events from the West Coast in Australia where it has been bloody hot and dry, 40 degrees C (+100F) a real contrast to what you guys have been through.

I gotta say, it has been remarkable to watch the spirits and character of the people in Queensland who have lost loved ones, their livelihood, house, car and possessions. You all should be proud of how you have faced and reacted to this disaster.

Good luck on re-building what is a great city and state of Australia.
