Sorry the XLF Newletter is a day late. Have you ever had one of those weekends when nothing that you planned to do got done? Well that was my weekend!
Autumn has realy kicked in now and the trees ar all gold and red. Treksters photo below can give you a bit of an idea how it looks here. Too bad I did not get a chance to ride this weekend as it would have been wonderful to ride through the hills here in Heidelberg.
Please keep your stories coming! I do not have one for the next newsletter.

Now that I consciously think back (and looking at the current calendar), I guess it was really over a year ago when I finally let the spark of an idea blossom into a full-blown flame –and indeed a passion. As it is with most things we humans get passionate about, we tend to prioritize and channel things in our lives until what we desire most comes to fruition. So it was with my desire to get back to riding a motorcycle. Only this time-- I knew it had to be a Harley. Year, model or color was of not much concern to me; I just knew it definitely had to have the Harley-Davidson name on it. I say “back to riding” like it was something that I gave up just a few years previous. In all honesty, it was actually several years ago when I was enjoying my medium-sized Japanese-made cruiser. It was dark brown and gold in color, and the engine always jumped to life and produced the distinctive, but rather mundane and muffled engine tone. However, if you bent an educated ear towards the power plant, you could also hear some chain noise and a little valve clicking. Though, at highway cruising speed it was very quiet, compared to some other bikes of that era, and if another bike pulled up along side of me, I couldn’t even hear my own bike. Were it not for the subtle vibrations in my hands and feet, I wouldn’t even know my engine was running.
The exact reasons I sold that bike, back in the early 80s, have slipped my mind right now, though I think is was a change in interests. I do recall having a passion to ride and I must have subconsciously planted that seed and some fond memories in my head. I think secretly I knew some day I would want to ride again, because in all the intervening years, whenever it came time to renew my driver’s license, I would always keep the motorcycle endorsement on it.
It was probably about the end of August 2006, when all those latent stored-up memories surfaced and I realized; the time to get back to riding a motorbike was then. I suppose some might liken this idea as just another “life-crisis” of one sort or another. Well, maybe it is but that really doesn’t concern me. It’s something I want to do and this is the time to do it.
Researching the various models and engine sizes in both the new and used market essentially took a lot of time. Hours were spent mostly on the Internet, looking at lots of dealer pages as well as the various used bikes for sale on EBay and other auction lists. I was learning a lot from the Internet, but I also got some good tips from a friend of mind who owned a Harley.
In the meantime, I also felt it would be important to brush up some on my riding skills, since I hadn’t really ridden a motorcycle for a good many years. I inquired about a Basic Rider Coarse offered at the local community college and enrolled in the next available class. The soonest I could get in was a class in early September. The class was given over a Friday evening with extensive review of the written material, and then Saturday and Sunday out in the parking lot going through a lot of riding exercises. The class was great, I learned a lot. I discovered (and fixed) a bad habit or two, passed the written and driving test with flying colors and was now confident I was ready to do some serious shopping for a bike.
Research and shopping culminated on November 9, 2006. That was the day my black 2006 1200 Custom, Sportster arrived, and I was able to finally get out for some long awaited “get acquainted” miles. To be perfectly honest my first few miles were a combination of excitement and apprehension. While staying away from busy streets and intersections, I found myself grinning just from the sheer excitement and anticipation of this day. Coupled with the excitement were thoughts and admonitions from the school in September, and I was trying very diligently to not make any stupid/novice errors.
Now, months later, I’ve traversed many miles riding the bike, getting acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of a Sportster and just plain having fun. Improving my riding skills is also very important to me, so often I will manage to work in some “practice” time in an abandoned parking lot, whenever I’m just doing some casual riding around town. I've done a few short trips within the area, but not any really long miles, over more than a day. Still, I'm very excited about getting back to motorcycling, and I'm looking forward to many more miles and adventures on the bike.

Back to Ridin'

Now that I consciously think back (and looking at the current calendar), I guess it was really over a year ago when I finally let the spark of an idea blossom into a full-blown flame –and indeed a passion. As it is with most things we humans get passionate about, we tend to prioritize and channel things in our lives until what we desire most comes to fruition. So it was with my desire to get back to riding a motorcycle. Only this time-- I knew it had to be a Harley. Year, model or color was of not much concern to me; I just knew it definitely had to have the Harley-Davidson name on it. I say “back to riding” like it was something that I gave up just a few years previous. In all honesty, it was actually several years ago when I was enjoying my medium-sized Japanese-made cruiser. It was dark brown and gold in color, and the engine always jumped to life and produced the distinctive, but rather mundane and muffled engine tone. However, if you bent an educated ear towards the power plant, you could also hear some chain noise and a little valve clicking. Though, at highway cruising speed it was very quiet, compared to some other bikes of that era, and if another bike pulled up along side of me, I couldn’t even hear my own bike. Were it not for the subtle vibrations in my hands and feet, I wouldn’t even know my engine was running.
The exact reasons I sold that bike, back in the early 80s, have slipped my mind right now, though I think is was a change in interests. I do recall having a passion to ride and I must have subconsciously planted that seed and some fond memories in my head. I think secretly I knew some day I would want to ride again, because in all the intervening years, whenever it came time to renew my driver’s license, I would always keep the motorcycle endorsement on it.
It was probably about the end of August 2006, when all those latent stored-up memories surfaced and I realized; the time to get back to riding a motorbike was then. I suppose some might liken this idea as just another “life-crisis” of one sort or another. Well, maybe it is but that really doesn’t concern me. It’s something I want to do and this is the time to do it.
Researching the various models and engine sizes in both the new and used market essentially took a lot of time. Hours were spent mostly on the Internet, looking at lots of dealer pages as well as the various used bikes for sale on EBay and other auction lists. I was learning a lot from the Internet, but I also got some good tips from a friend of mind who owned a Harley.
In the meantime, I also felt it would be important to brush up some on my riding skills, since I hadn’t really ridden a motorcycle for a good many years. I inquired about a Basic Rider Coarse offered at the local community college and enrolled in the next available class. The soonest I could get in was a class in early September. The class was given over a Friday evening with extensive review of the written material, and then Saturday and Sunday out in the parking lot going through a lot of riding exercises. The class was great, I learned a lot. I discovered (and fixed) a bad habit or two, passed the written and driving test with flying colors and was now confident I was ready to do some serious shopping for a bike.
Research and shopping culminated on November 9, 2006. That was the day my black 2006 1200 Custom, Sportster arrived, and I was able to finally get out for some long awaited “get acquainted” miles. To be perfectly honest my first few miles were a combination of excitement and apprehension. While staying away from busy streets and intersections, I found myself grinning just from the sheer excitement and anticipation of this day. Coupled with the excitement were thoughts and admonitions from the school in September, and I was trying very diligently to not make any stupid/novice errors.
Now, months later, I’ve traversed many miles riding the bike, getting acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of a Sportster and just plain having fun. Improving my riding skills is also very important to me, so often I will manage to work in some “practice” time in an abandoned parking lot, whenever I’m just doing some casual riding around town. I've done a few short trips within the area, but not any really long miles, over more than a day. Still, I'm very excited about getting back to motorcycling, and I'm looking forward to many more miles and adventures on the bike.
