I am in the process of installing an XB9 motor into a C&J XR750 monoshock frame and must use a carburator. Have the motor in the frame, removed all the FI and installed a 2001 XL1200 intake. I need to know what needs to be done to the ignition/electrical system. Also how does the carb mount/secure to the motor as there are no vent holes on the side of the heads.
Espically want to hear from a mechanic who has done Buell FI to Carb.
Thanks

XB motors breath thru the top of the rocker covers (not thru umbrella valves like a Sporty motor). Each cover will have a black valve sticking up from it pushed into a rubber grommet with a tail on it to take the ventings to a breather can via some tube. You can drill/tap 1/2" UNC to mount the carb to the heads like on a XL/Buell carb'd motor. HTH.

You cannot just install a different ignition on an XB motor as the rotor is driven off a different cam compared to other XL engines. You will need to cut a new groove for the timing rotor and it needs to be perfetc. Why did you change the heads BTW? Your stock XB heads are the best heads available.

I don't think the heads have been changed from XB? Just the manifold?

You "may well" find that the standard XB ECM will run the sparks with the "fuel" bits disconnected anyway. Some folk have used the Buell ECM for sparks and fitted a MegaSquirt controller for fuel. In principle, you are doing no different.

"If" you wanted to install an XL or carb'd Buell ignition system it would be less risky (I believe) to make a custom pick up cup rather than monkey about with the camshaft end. HTH.

I'd like to be the first to beg for your FI rig. It's for my LSR bike; I'm developing the intercooler at this time. Can I help you with a rigid intake manifold?
