I have a 1985 and would like to replace my fuel tank. What year models will fit, a 1985 xlx. Also are the handle bars on this model 7/8 or 1 " . Thanks for any info or advice ,Shane

The parts book for 1979 thru 1985 lists: 61023-83A, fits 83 to 85 XLX

That may be the mounts or it may be the style of the tank. I do not know if the mounts are the same as other years. I would check the catalog companies like J&P cycles to see what they list in their catalogs.

the bars are 1".

PS, you also need dimpled bars on an 85 so make sure of that when ordering.

Any Sportster tank from 1982-1992 should be an exact fit. The 1993-2003 tanks will also fit, but require rubber bushings to mount correctly. Not all seats in this era will work with all tanks (the 3+ gal ones), though.
