Starting a café’ image thread. I have a bunch & will post more; hopefully we will all see some we have never seen before! Here is one off the Yahoo café list. Don’t know much about it, just that I love that rear fender.

Hey if you look close that is the orginal fender that has been cut by a cutoff saw, plasma cutter etc. The fairing is what I am gonna get for mine next year.

That rear fender is very nice! I like it a lot, I just don't have the guts to cut-off the fender struts just in case the OL wants to go 2 up.

They do some really good work. Sportsters, knuckleheads and shovelheads all in a cafe racer style...not in a modern racer style but more a 50's thing. I think the 'nice motorcycle' thing is better shown on this site: http://engrish.com/ :roflblack (this is all in good fun ;) )

Most of the Engrish found on Engrish.com is not an attempt to communicate - English is used as a design element in Japanese products and advertising to give them a modern look and feel (or just to "look cool"). There is often no attempt to try to get it right, nor do the vast majority of the Japanese population (= consumers) ever attempt to read the English design element in question (the girl wearing the “Spread Beaver” shirt for example, had no idea what it said until a foreigner pointed it out to her).
(From engrish.com FAQ)

From Mr. Tan the Ebony Sport owner.

The tank and the seat was hand-made in Malaysia. It
was done by one of our brothers in the Warpigs MC. I give him the pictures
of the bike I want and what I have in mind and he fabricate it.

The two level effect from seat/rear fender to tank/steering head perfectly illustrate the futility of making a decent looking cafe racer with the sportster frame- no matter how well it may work. If you want form with your function, junk that stock chassis and get a featherbed. You will like the results.

Hi Ed,
Good to see you around too (in cyberspace anyway). I just joined this forum, so you know where you will find me first...yep, hangin around the cafe threads.

I've got lots of pics of my old cafe, but when I click on the "insert image" icon it asks for a "URL" web address, and I only have my pics on my computer. I'm new here so maybe I'm missing how to post a pic, but it seems it has to already be on the web and you link to it. Am I right or wrong?

CAMS should be great again this year. Im gonna do my best to be there, but I'm not positive I'll make it this year.

Wow... I really like those black pipes. I want to get something like that for my Night Rod.

I wanted to pass on an interesting history to the Cafe Racer.

This comes from IronCross.Net

I wanted to simply post the link, since there are photos, but I'm not allowed until I have posted at least 15 messages I was told. Maybe I should just post a bunch of crap somewhere... Anyways.. here it is. I also wanted to post a pic of my bike.. but it won't allow that either it seems.

STREETFIGHTERS AND CAFE ACERS

By Englishman
Pictures courtesy of caferacer.com

I’ve been hearing lately, mainly from younger riders, that the true successor to the choppers of the 70’s, are not the hardcore chops one might find on the pages of The Horse ,but in fact are the sportbikes known as "streetfighters"!

Their reasoning being, the original ‘Bobjobs’ of the fifties and early sixties were created by racers, hacking off unnecessary parts and weight from their bikes in order to squeeze more speed from them. These bobjobs evolved into the choppers of the seventies, moving away from the totally performance-oriented world of racing and concentrating on aesthetics and ‘coolness’, rather than all-out speed. Therefore (they say) the Streetfighters are the rightful heirs to the chopper throne.

In case you are not familiar with these bikes, they are generally assembled from parts taken from Japanese sportbikes, usually using the best components from the different manufacturers to piece together a ‘naked’ (no fairing) sportbike, usually with a raised rear end (monoshock, of course), twin headlights and a bad attitude. There are companies such as Spondon Engineering in England, making specialty frames for these bikes and no doubt there is a whole underground aftermarket springing up.

What they are forgetting (in my view of course), is that the great tradition of taking the best parts to make the fastest bikes evolved at the same time as the bobjobs were taking shape, only in England this practice resulted in a Café Racer!

Originally, the term Café Racer was a derogatory reference to bikes that were only styled to look like racers. Rearsets and clip-on handlebars did not a racer make, and it was thought these bikes were only good for racing from one transport café to another.

For those of you not familiar with the British Transport café, it was a generic term applied to varying sizes or Brit-style truck stops. Nothing like they have in the U.S of course, but could vary between the likes of the famous "Ace" café in London, to the roadside tea stand, about the size of a hot dog vendor at a carnival.

Before long, however, the genre took on a life of it’s own. The very best components of British bikes were robbed from donor bikes and assembled as lean, mean shiny balls-to-the-wall lane scratchers. The most popular frame for the Café Racer was by far the Norton Featherbed. Norton used this frame on just about every bike they produced in the sixties, with subtle differences, notably the ‘Wideline’ and ‘Slimline’ variants. It was soon discovered that just about any British bike engine could be shoehorned into this excellent-handling frame in place of the underpowered and shaky 750 Atlas twin or 350 single.

The most famous variant being, of course, the Triton! (TRIumph-norTON…get it??) Triumph’s excellent 650 twin was a good fit in the featherbed frame, coupled with an aluminum tank and Norton’s roadholder front end made for a potent package. Many other versions appeared, the most exotic (and expensive) was probably the Norvin, a Vincent 1000 V-Twin squeezed into the stretched-to-the-limit Featherbed. As with today’s streetfighters, companies stepped up and offered frames and bolt-on parts to help in the completion of these projects. Rickman and Egli, being two that spring to mind. The Egli-framed Vincents are some of the nicest examples of sixties racer-style.

The tradition of using the best available components to build the ‘best’ motorcycle can be traced to the dawn of motorcycling as we know it. One of the most famous British bikes ever was the Brough Superior SS100, a 1000cc V-Twin that was guaranteed by the maker to be capable of 100 mph or your money back! As impressive as this was, the SS100 (as were the variants before it) was mostly just a bike assembled from the parts available from the various manufacturers of the day. The engines being made either by JAP (J.A.Prestwich) or AMC (No, not the ‘Gremlin’ people, this was the parent company of Matchless/AJS).

This is much the same practice being followed today by the ‘clone’ bike builders with S&S taking the place of JAP.

Fortunately, there is enough interest in Café Racers to keep the aftermarket interested in supplying parts to build ‘specials’ today. Companies such as Dresda make some very nice Triton parts, websites such as Acecafe.com and caferacer.com are keeping the memories alive.

In my view, a well-sorted Café Racer (and there are some very bad ones out there), especially a nice Triton (pre-unit) is one of the coolest bikes to see out on the road, whereas I’m afraid that the latest techno-flash streetfighter does nothing more for me than raise my eyebrows (although I can appreciate all the work that has gone into it).

Clearly, then, the Streetfighter is merely the modern incarnation of the Café Racer.

Which leaves the choppers of today as being the direct descendants of their sixties and seventies roots. Of course the excesses of that period are largely gone (the 90-foot over front ends…square tube front ends etc.) but the original Koolness prevails.

Cheers,
Mike

Hello, I converted a 2002 883R to a XLCR by using an Air-Tech tank and tail section. I used a Emgo 1/4 fairing from J.C. Whittney, less expensive and better looking than Air-Tech. I did the Buell 1200 Thunderstorm conversion, Chainsikle rear set, Force exhaust system and changed the springs and shocks to Progressive. Took about a year on weekends to get it done making custom brackets and painting the wheels and calibers black from the original cast finish, as well as painting the front forks. Lots of work but it is better than going to Mecatwin for their Euro pricing and shipping.

Agreed. Unfortunatley the 883R and 1200R are really just a paintjob. I'd love to see a real racer made of them. Better suspension, different (lighter) fenders, 2:1 exhaust, some more power out of the 1200. I think that would be pretty cool.

How is it just a paint job? When they first came out, if you wanted the higher suspension, a peanut tank, and 2-up seat and pegs from the factory, you had to get the 1200R, which also came with the hotter motor (as opposed to the 883), the 19" front wheel, and it was the only model with dual front brakes. You get more than just a paintjob with an R model.

You also need to keep in mind, the original Roadster back in the day was a miniatire touring bike, not a sport bike.

That said, I am with you - I'd like to see a factory "hot-rod" made of this bike. So much untapped potnetial.

How the heck did I miss this thread??? Wow, great pics, especially of Larry's Prudnts and Timbo's old bike. Sorry I am going to miss you guys at CAMS this weekend.

Everyone knows what my bike looks like, but here is the last couple pictures I have before the pinion gear sheared off (Timbo was present for that fun) and the engine went bye bye. Hopefully it'll be back soon and better than ever, I have my fingers crossed that I'll be riding soon.

I just bought a set of clip-ons and rearsets for it, so as soon as I get it back, it'll finally have the Cafe riding position I've been waiting for. And as soon as I get it back and get the new parts on it, I'll repost. BTW, got my new plate: HOTRD XL.

I’m a big fan of the American Cafe’ Racers. I think it’s just a little overpriced. I’d sure like to see OCC build something like that on TV. If I hit the lotto it would be one of the top ten bikes I buy.

I saw an OCC show when they were building a bike for Leno and the powdercoated springer new crap wouldn't go back together until they scraped it off. Overpaid poser builders. Leno isn't. He's an overpaid rider buyer in that order. At least he appreciates Vincents. Matt

If he didn’t do the exhaust out the tail he wouldn’t have needed to put the oil tank where his chin spoiler should be. He could have made the oil tank look like a chin spoiler, now that would have been sweet.

Not sure if I should be posting here.
Anyway's, after a long frustrating summer with my bike being down for numerous reasons,
Iv'e finally got it back and all seems wonderful for the time being. The conversion had to be done for a 2nd time (following 3 blown head gaskets) and the indy was essentially forced to throw in new 1200 jugs and new (once again) wiseco flat top 1200 pistons and gaskets at there expense. It turns out the machine shop machined to much from my 883 cylinders. I also blew a small chunk from one of the first new wiseco piston. Again all seems Well and it's running sweet! Still breakin her in and During its down time I thought I'd do some additional mods.
I thought I'd share some pics with the new mods- Gauges, cut rear fender, re-done seat and front & rear Euro turn signals.
Can't compete with Roland Sands, yet I like the changes so far.

I still have trouble with pics at this site so I'll give it a shot and if a pic should appear I'll send more; otherwise I can only show them as attachments which I believe I'm limited with space. Also, for some reason I'm having trouble uploading my new pics to my Gallery that disappeared.
Perhaps Edman or someone else can help....

1998, 883 with "Kawasaki Z1000 type" fairing, Hi-flow K&N air filter, Dynojet kit, Powernow, Norton fork boots, Rizoma triple tree (4 degrees) and forward controls, Supertrapp exaust, small drag bar, hugger rear shocks .

Bought recently but not yet on the bike, SE ignition module and coil, Small tacho with it's bracket from PRO-One and relocation clamp for front turn signals.

I don't think I'll change the rear of the bike. It should look better not it's not really useful for carrying luggages and travelling.

Hi Swankster.
I found this picture in a German forum.I think this bike is from Czechia. It's realy awsome!

As for my GT550,I totally chopperized my GT 550 way back in the 70s.
It's red and golden metall flake colored.Maybe the only GT550 chopper in Europe.I made around 60000Km on this bike.
But unfortunately it has a damaged crank and piston since 1981.Actually it didn't run since then.
Who knows,maybe some day.....

I agree edman.
Based on early discussion both north & south, there will likely be a large turnout.

Funny how tastes change over time.

On the first page of this thread there was a post by me from July 2005, about not liking the cafe seat on an awesome bike.

Now I am building a cafe seat for mine. How about that shit... LOL

First the fairing, then the tail gets done like the '62 XLR with a Sparco limp dick tail light. I don't like brake lights on the side...look too much like a turn signal from behind. It usually sits higher, but with my 192 pounds on it it sags a bit. I may toy with adjustment on the billet racers to gain another inch of height, but I think it may be a little rough on the roads here
Thanks for the comments

Very nice! I love the rims. I agree it would be cool to get that rear end up a little bit.

So what is the best way to raise it? My Work's Billet Racers are pretty dang stiff as it is right now. I do have a bit of adjustment for the way it rides, but any stiffer and I may need a kidney belt or just go rigid ;-)

Without welding new bottom shock tab mounts up on the swing arm,
you'll have to go with longer shocks. I don't think you'd want to do that or spend the bucks on new ones, so I'd just keep what you got.
But then again what the hell do I know, you might be filthy rich and can afford Ohlins or some longer Works shocks.
Your bike looks pretty freakin good the way it looks and is set up presently.

how much did the works run you? I've been tryin' to get ahold of WP for a while now to find out on some 15" piggybacks with chrome springs but they haven't responded to my e-mail.
