I never thought of it before today. You know how people stick things in the back of their pickup and not flag it? Today I was riding past a Home Depot, at the light in front of me was one of those pickups with a 16’ ¾" 1/4 round sticking out over the tailgate and bending down face high with no flag, I saw it just in time to move my head and it cought my ear, that hurt! Beware of Home Depot or any other hardware store or lumberyard.

Geeze glad you weren't seriously hurt. Never ceases to amaze me the stupidity of some people. They know the thing is sticking out far because they loaded it in there.

The end of a 3/4' 1/4 round is not easy to see!!!

You should have followed him to the next set of lights, got off of the bike and thrusted the lumber through his rear windshield.

This is why in NY they have a law to make you put a red flag at the end of anything protruding from the rear.

Glad you avoided serious injury. Sounds like the guy who loaded it in the truck was a real j@ckoff. How hard is it to tie a godd@mn flag on a piece of lumber???? :doh:madtwo

Home Depot will give you a flag, and something to hold it on there for you.
You could've just reached up, and shortened his lumber for him. Sure would be tempting.

Its 4 feet in NY. All my equipment is marked at 3'10" so when I load my truck after a job I know exactly where to put it so I'm legal. Plus My 24 foot pic plank has a red flag (actually it a golf towel) permenantly attached to it just in case. I've seen people with ladders sticking out of the back of trucks 8-10 feet before unflagged. All it takes is a little common sence but in this day and age its all about being in a hurry. I'm sure if all the people with their heads stuck up their ass pulled them out at the same time you would hear a thunderous Pop that would echo across the entire country. :frownthre

This reminds me of a time when I was running last summer. I run against the traffic and I saw a truck coming toward me with a 2x6 or something large sticking out to the side without a flag. If I hadn't seen it it would have hit me in the face or neck with him traveling at probably 40 to 50 mph. Imagine how that woulda felt. I still cringe about it.
BTW glad to hear you are ok after your incident.

glad to hear your ok. sounds like a story i saw on tv once. this was on one of those shows similar to rescue 911. one of those true story rescue shows. i think this took place down in south america. there were 2 spanish guys riding a bike on a dirt road and a pickup infront of them had a piece of steel pipe hanging out the back and the truck had to stop for whatever reason and the bike slid on the dirt and the pipe went right through both guys on the bike right about at there shoulder area. the guys were still conscious when police and ambulance showed up. they had to cut the pipe inbetween the 2 guys and infront of the first guy and take them to the hospital with the piece of pipe still in them because they didn't want to remove it because they were afraid they would bleed to death. the 2 guys survived after surgery. very lucky i think.
i usually stay away from trucks as much as possible. most of these guys don't even know the height of their own truck they are driving. there is one bridge in the town i work for that almost gets hit every week because the guy don't know the height of his truck and tries to squeeze underneath it at about 45mph tearing the top off the truck like a sardine can. i've seen stuff fall off the back of these trucks because they are not secured enough. and many don't use a flag at all.

bunch of dip sh--ts
I think if the piece of 1/4 round was sitting on the side of me (after hitting my ear) I could not resist grabbing it and trowing it to the ground--hopefully broken.
