View Full Version : Why was the Sportster left out of the engine rebuild program?
jimmyess333 2nd November 2007, 21:31 How come there is an engine rebuild program for all the big twins but nothing for the sportser?
Is this to suggest that the Sportster is disposable, or maybe an upsell tactic?:frownone
plevine1 2nd November 2007, 21:40 Interesting question. I think only WillyG can provide a REAL answer.
jimmyess333 2nd November 2007, 21:52 Not for Sportsters....
Must not be enough money in it for H-D.

TempeC4 2nd November 2007, 21:56 Too many Sportster owners are capable of rebuilding their own engines? :)
Maxanimal 2nd November 2007, 22:01 Maybe it has something to do with the one piece engine and tranny design
SportyJoe 2nd November 2007, 22:38 Could be that Bullet Proof engine on the Sporty...
waiteitei 2nd November 2007, 22:50 could be that the sportser is now a throw away disposable bike
The factory os moving that way, they removed the trap door on the gear box so its a complete engine strip down if the gearbox needs attention
gusotto 2nd November 2007, 23:09 The price that is charged for the rebuilt BT engines ($3,500-$6,900 depending on model), it doesn't make sense to pay the factory the price of a rebuilt that is a good chunk towards the price of a new Sporty.
I doubt if the price includes R&R.
khaskins 3rd November 2007, 02:14 It those prices you could find someone to rebuild it for you and custom paint while your at it. Or you could do it yourself.
srrice40 3rd November 2007, 02:19 maybe it's because most of the sporty riders have already rebuilt or hop'd up there motors, I mean seriously how many sporty's out there still have there original motors in them :smoke
OutlawTexan67 3rd November 2007, 02:26 Be honest,Would you want the MoCo to rebuild your sporty? And for the price you would pay them for a rebuild you could rebuild it your self or let an Indy do it and have one bad ass motor.
Duane Wood 3rd November 2007, 03:01 Sportster owners won't pay the money H-D would ask.
They sell so few Sportsters vs. big-twins, with fewer still becoming "high-mileage" machines, it's not worth their time at the factory level to set such a program up.

GOOD point!
I was imagining the Sporty engine being rebuilt for a lower price than the BT's but that's probably TOO MUCH imagination knowing HD.
We'll, I feel confident with cylinders, pistons, heads, cams, ect.
But the bottom end (cank and transmission) scares me.
I'm the same with old V8's, give me any shortblock and I'll build it but cranks and plasti-guages is where I draw the line.
Hell, I'd settle for a Sportster Shortblock exchange program if were at a reasonable price.
If not, I suppose I could get an indy bike shop to rebuild the bottom end? (not now but in the future)

So THAT'S how they got them to stop leaking!?
Kind of like walling youself into a room to stop a draft. - JK
So, the only way into the gearbox is to split the case?
I'll have to look at the shop manual.
BTW- I can't wait until the Cylmer, Haynes, or Chilton is out for the 06. I don't really like way the factory book illustrtates and explains things.
jimmyess333 3rd November 2007, 05:52 I'm waiting for confirmation on this:

Harley does still have the rebuild program. It's $2000 for a complete rebuild on an EVO and if you want black and chrome it's $2200. This does not include your dealers tear down, shipping, and throwing it back together costs. There is an article on page 108 of Hot Bike, volume 39, No. 10. Actually the latest issue but apparently they don't go by monthly dating"
hillers03 3rd November 2007, 07:47 Throw a rotax motor in the new sportys, just a thought.

They can have a new model line called the Radster sportster but it would have to be a chicks bike!!:laugh :banana
Jeffytune 3rd November 2007, 08:28 Because by the time you reman it, it would cost about the same as a new unit does, and a Indy could do it for half the cost of that.

yes and to split the cases the motor has to come out of the frame
