View Full Version : New H-D Quick Detach Windshield!

Like many, I'm not a fan of a windshield on a bike, especially a sporty. Well after white knuckling it after 70 MPH + on the freeway and certain highways trying to stay on the bike (wind fatigue is a mother) I broke down and bought the H-D quick detach, standard height. Very expensive but I must say, it is definately a more comfortable ride.

I'm 5'9 and the standard height shield top comes right to my mouth. I can see over the shield and not through it and speeds over 60 MPH are comfortable. No more white knuckle, hang on rides. Well worth it in this case. The one complaint that I do have?

You can hear every damn noise the sporty evo motor makes. Talk about a loud engine! I hear all kinds of crap going on that makes me wonder "What is that?" "What's making that noise?" :roflblack One sound that bothers me that I noticed is a low sounding pop (finger in the lips & cheek pop like the song LOLIPOP! Pop! Dun, Dun Dun Dun! Dun!) type noise (like something loose in my fork back or elsewhere) between 40-50 MPH. Oil (syn3) level is great and hardly uses it, runs real strong, all the bolts are tight, tire pressure is spot on, belt is tightened right and feels good...All I can say is it has been hotter than hell (92 degree's inland here in Southen, CA) so maybe that made my bike a bit uncomfortable (noisier than normal) being air cooled and I did hit some traffic.

As they say, Sporties are loud engines but with the SE Pro II's, no shield and wind, I never did really hear the engine noises accept for the nice rumble when at speed. With the shield, you hear it all but other than that, rides are very comfortable...

I think I feel the same way about the windshield. Never was a big fan. I have less than 1000mi but the times a went out on the highway(the only route I can take) the wind just kept pounding me. I know I could have stayed on the bike all day if I didn't didn't feel like I was constantley being blown off the bike. I think I might break down and get the HD quick detach(not sure which size...I'm 5'5"). Does handle bar type have anything to do with this to? Is this less noticable on other models?

10 seconds to take off. 25-30 seconds to install.

Very comfortable to ride behind.

I broke down and bought a standard height detachable windshield. Like many others, I don't really like the look, but it is great on the highway and cold weather. Another benefit is reduced strain on the old hearing. Traveling at highway speeds without or with a half helmet can cause hearing loss. Despite the added benefits, I still feel guilty when I put the windshield on. :o

**One of these days I'll take time to post pictures of my bike**

I am about 5'5"...Anyone around my height have a shield. I would hate to keep ordering and returning. I know HD makes a standard and compact but there are also a ton of others.

I was wanting a quick detach windshield a while back too, and that's good info to know.

However, since I got my full face helmet, I don't think I need one anymore.

Things that used to be a problem like huge bugs, wind, noise and rain just don't bother me anymore....

The only thing I really want to eliminate is the "blowing off the bike affect" from the wind. I just know I could ride much more without that feeling.

i have the full size quick detachable one for my bike and am extremely happy with the flexibility it gives me...............i to do not like the wind and the noise at 70mph.............it comes off and on in seconds.literally!

And the height can be adjusted to suit you by attaching it at different heights on the forks. The lower limiting factor is the top of the light. I like it lower where i can easily view over the top and not thru the windshield but cuts the wind and noise considerably. Around town and 55 and underi leave it off. Therrfor the best of both worlds. I paid 304 from it at the time i bought the bike......i think that was 10% off the retail. Not cheap :frownone but worth it after 5 hours in the wind! :banana :banana :danceele

I have the Super Sport QD windshield. See the bottom 1/3 of my web page.
It is too tall if I slouch, but great when it rains.
I'll put it to the test 2 weeks from today. (1400 + miles round trip)

Very fast on and off, but the dealer installed the springs backwards. they were trying to force it up (off) rather than down (on).

10 or 15 minutes with some wrenches and blue loctite fixed that. I just swapped the left/right springs with each other.

Look at my gallery and you will see some pictures, also some close-ups for the cables. I can ride further and longer w/ the w/s on and the quick-connect is just that. :banana

so the standard height is perfect for me but will be too tall for you. I think being on a bike and looking through a shield is just wrong. Mine comes just up to my mouth so I can see over the shield and feel the wind. I just don't have that constant white nuckle affect when on the freeway and interstates at 70 + MPH.

So you would probably benefit from the H-D Quick Release Low Profile windshield.

And if it works for ya, more power to ya. For me, it was trying to keep my ass on the seat at 65 MPH +. The wind in my face along with the bugs, don't bother me at all. Anyways, I can cruise on the freeway at 85 MPH and relax.

the correct height is mid way on the bridge of your nose I have the standard quick detach and it is 17 inches above the head light. it hits me also about the mouth I would brefer it to be about 3 inches taller but I can live with it. by the way I am 6 ft tall so if you are 5ft 5 I would say the compact should be good

Thanks loco and jwb47. I don't mind the bugs either. Think I'll try the compact/low profile.

YES I know exactly how you feel about the engine being noisy as hell. I can hear either the primary chain whirring away or some other chain like cam chain maybe? It is annoying.

Thanks loco and jwb47. I don't mind the bugs either. Think I'll try the compact/low profile.

They will pull em out of the box and show ya and you can judge from there. You can also adjust the shield on the forks for varioua heights as well. I have mine attached on the top portion at the lower end of my forks. I could bring up the shield maybe an inch more to bring the shield up to my nose but I like it right where it is at. Between my nose and my mouth.

Good luck!

And now a dance from a few of our sponsors! :danceele :banana :cucumber :banapurp

Well I just broke down and purchased the Quick Release Detachable Compact Windshield - Low Profile. Part #58602-04 from Chicago. They are having 20% off I think until 7/31. Hopefully this will make longer rides at 70+ mi more comfortable. I know I'll remove it for local riding.

If the low profile quick detach is to low for you (does not come up to the point of your nose or to your top lip), then you can return it for another shield to try. Ypu are paying a prtetty penny and getting a shield right is very important.

I rode at 80 MPH on the 91 freeway in Cali (Corona area) and at one point did it one handed AT 80 MPH!!!! Try that on any sporty with no shield :roflblack

And now a dance! :dpepper :banadanc :banana

I bought a Quick Release, Detachable Compact Windshield, lightly smoked, #58601-04 for my 2005 1200XL-R. It greatly improved my ride above 65 mph and am very glad I have it. If anybody is interested, I bought an extra unit (erroneously ordered 2), still in the box, which lists for $369.95. I will ship it to anybody in the USA for $235, which includes shipping. Anybody within driving distance of Central MA can have it for $200. EBay is next.

But outside the main locals in say Corona, CA on a 100 degree day (1:30 afternoon) to Tom's Farm, it was a wide open ride. There was traffic but we were all boogying down the highway.

This is the picture from HD web site of the one I got:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/media/images/productphotos/PNA/57960_97_VIEW2_195e6.jpg

I am also 5'5" and I got the HD Super Sport Detachable Windshield. I had to mount it as low as it would go but at that height it is even with the bottom of my nose.

To take care of the wind that blows up between the windshield and myself I got a Jacks Flaps Aero Vest (http://www.jacksflaps.com/.

With the 2 of them I am very happy.

Had a change of plans. The HD QD Shield was on back order. I need it alot sooner(Planning a ride for vacation). Just ordered the SwitchBlade™ Shorty® Windshield from National Cycle. It also has some kind of locking mechanism. Even though I rarely stray out of sight of the bike its a nice feeling that it should be harder for "unathorized removal". It does leave hardware on the bike though. I will give it a try.

I know mine aint coming off of my bike. It's a dramatic difference for me. 75 MPH + is smooth as butter and now with the SE Fork Brace, no wobbles or shimmies... :wonderlan
