View Full Version : Just bought a TIG welder
stevo 26th July 2005, 13:50 Just bought myself a TIG welder.....
It's AC/DC with High Frequency means I can do Aluminium as well as steel.....
So I can make more custom parts including frames....... and do port and chamber mods to heads...have been havin trouble gettin others to put the material EXACTLY where I want it...
Have some mods to do to the sporty frame and then I'll get the frame powdercoated or 2 pac'd ..havn't decided yet...
I'm also gonna make a custom swingarm with eccentric axle adjusters so I can raise the ride height for normal/twistie stuff and lower it for drag use.
raysheen 26th July 2005, 14:13 very nice! sounds great! I sure could have some fun with that...of course on the other hand I'm not a very good welder so maybe it's a good thing I don't have one!
stevo 26th July 2005, 14:20 I've done this stuff for a livin on and off...
Just gonna take a bit to get used to this machine ... and it's a few years since I've done any TIG work...
I can see myself makin some neat parts....
flathead45 26th July 2005, 15:27 now I'm pissed , you got a tig and I don't, can I come over and use it? ;)
then again right now I don't have a garage ..... or a house for that matter
FSZEKE302 26th July 2005, 15:43 WHAT MACHINE DID YOU GET?
RedRider 26th July 2005, 16:13 Stevo, we are gonna need some pics of these custom parts once ya start cranking them out so we can drool over them! :banarock :D :D

Yeah mate ...just drop over and you can borrow it wheneva ya want...
I've got a workshop but no house :wonderlan ..been livin upstairs at the workshop for a while now...wil be movin into a house in the next few weeks..
I'll post some pics when it gets here ... I think I'm gonna be makin everything with the TIG for a while to work out all it's settings.....
good welding...is about 10% knowledge .5% luck and 85% practice
mordak 26th July 2005, 23:48 Congrats Stevo!!! What brand/model did you get? I've been looking at the Lincoln Precision TIG 185 and the Miller Econotig AC/DC. They are a little bit different machines but both are very nice indeed.
L.B. 26th July 2005, 23:48 Congrats, I know you will put it to good use. :clap
I would like to get one some day. Used to play around with one a bit in the Service; I'm not any good though...

I bought an italian one..... about half the price of Lincoln and millers
It was either buy a brand name DC machine or a cheaper AC/DC machine...
Hopefully I've made the right choice..this one has copper coils too..not aluminium..
I've used some good welders and shitty welders over the years.......in recent years most of the mines have brought in VRD (voltage reduction) and it's a bloody pain tryin to do an X-ray quality weld with them ...this one doesn't have VRD...but it's ONLY gonna be in my shed with me usin it..
GOTWA 27th July 2005, 01:20 That's cool Stevo. :clap
Okay, so here's what I need.................... :D
edman 28th July 2005, 01:50 Congratulations! Very cool please post things that you make or modify.
vivisix 28th July 2005, 02:43 so what's the other 4.5%
stevo 28th July 2005, 07:30 that was ..........5% not a 0.5% ..
I realised that when I reread but couldn't be bothered fixin it

I will agree Stevo, the Lincoln's and Miller's are damned expensive. But I look at tools like this: if you buy quality then it'll last. Now I ain't sayin' the Italian's don't make a quality welder 'cause I don't have a clue about their welders. I do know I like their food a hell of a lot and if that's any indication of their welders, then they'll have to be good!!! :D
Nortley 4th January 2006, 17:54 Good on yer-
Much better to spend he money on tools and make exactly what you want, or thought you wanted, than on a bunch of glitzy copycat parts but hey, money spent you still have the tool to make that part right. Any dweeb with credit can build a name dropper custom, your bike will be YOUR bike. TIG- just keep it lit and feed the puddle.
a45junkie 4th January 2006, 21:12 practice practice practice, tig great fun, very versatile. have fun with that.
petefwa 5th January 2006, 10:41 Have'nt tried TIG but I drive a MIG welder for a living. You dont get better at it, you just make less stuff ups. Understanding your machine and how the fusion process works is the secret to good, consistent welds.
stevo 5th January 2006, 11:47 the other good thing about spendin money on tools is that they can not only make your own parts but customers parts too .... which means they eventually pay for themselves and ya got it for free :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Will be makin some stunt cages tomorrow usin the TIG ...
L.B. 5th January 2006, 12:11 I take it you have been gettin some good use out of your welder then.
It's a shame you're not a little closer, I've got a engine case that could use your services.
stevo 5th January 2006, 13:39 I can fix some cases...
here's one that a mate did that's a bit beyond my ability to fix :D:D:D

What kind of scoot is that?
stevo 5th January 2006, 13:54 Suzi GSXR 1000 ...
he was doin a highchair wheelstand at about 70mph .... very lucky it thru the rod out and kept spinning
the worst part was we didn't get it on video....

Yup, real lucky it kept spinning if it happened in the middle of a wheelie....
Sounds like his guardian angel was workin' overtime that day... ;) :D
Did the motor get over-revved? What was the cause of the rod cutting loose?
stevo 5th January 2006, 14:19 years of abuse.....
can't blame the engine..... and ya can't see the oil light when ya doin a highchair
