I stripped the head of a bolt and there was not enough room to get vise-grips on it to get it out. I went to my local Sears and got a set of Bolt-outs. These things are awesome. You just get the size you need, slide it over the bolt to remove (some force may be required), and turn. The bolt-out has a spiral cut in it that actually digs into the head of the bolt and seems to only get tighter on the head as you loosen the bolt out. I would recommend these to anyone that wrenches.

And probably at 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a comparable Snap-On unit!!!
I bought the 5 piece set that you can use in a drill and it cost $20.

Sounds like I need to add one of these kits to my toolbox. Doc, do they have different sets for different types of bolts/screws?
I stripped the crap out of one of the allen screws that hold the primary chain adjuster cover on.

I'm not for sure about different types. I do know that they have various sizes that are used for hex and 12-point bolts.

Yes Michelle. They have the socket type like Doc is talking about for hex-head type bolts and such and they have an "insert" style for screws and what not.
Not sure which type would work better on a socket-head allen though.
Xena,
Looking at the craftsman website, they have various types of screw removers.

Oh yeah, they're super cool! I've borrowed them from my nephew several times, need to get my own.

LMAO. Kim, he said "snap-on", not strap-on.
FYI: I'm not into either one. :laugh

If it's one of those flat socket head screws you can take out the other one and size a drill bit with it. Grab a bit that is slightly bigger than the thread OD, and drill the stripped head socket. When the bit gets past the flathead it will spin free, you can then pop off the cover and the screw will come right out because the tension will be gone. :clap Grease on the drill bit flutes will catch the chips.
Good luck!
