Have trouble gettin into gear and when its in... sometimes jump back out.And a lot of false neutral.
Sometimes it changes no problem.

Assuming it's not external like a clutch cable adjustment, loose belt, loose belt pulley or clutch problem, it's going to be inside. Once you've checked everything outside, go into the primary. Make sure the primary shoe did not split and is not worn out. Check the shift detent to see if it's worn or falling off. If that looks OK, then pull the clutch apart, since you're already there. There is a plate inside the clutch that can come apart in a bad way and cause problems. Check it while you're in there. Then, keep going.
I think the problem is beyond all that, with worn dogs on the gears inside the transmission (2nd and 3rd on MS and CS). A little wear is NOT OK on the dogs. That's all it takes for it to miss shifts, and when it feels like it's in gear, to jump back out.
I hope for your sake it's external, but I suspect you will find worn dogs on transmission gears inside the trans.

Thanks for reply.
Clutch cable was siezed at adjusters, tranny oil was thick and looked as if not been ghanged for some time. But I think it is internal!!I am just waiting on a service manual then pull the thing apart and hope for the best.Wont hold my breath.Always look on the bright side :D Cheers

There are aftermarket options. You can install a 6 speed trans from Baker (http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/xl/index.htm) if you're inclined. You can install replacement gears from Andrews (http://andrewsproducts.com/motorcycle/index.htm) if you like. If you only need a couple gears, you can just use OEM stuff or you can replace as much as you like with aftermarket parts.
