Scored a working used 12v generator off of ebay. I want to clean/rebuild this one, and use it as my backup to the existing one on the ironhead. Just wondering if there are some parts that should be replaced while I have it apart? Also, I see that J&P has a "small parts" rebuild kit for this generator, and would like to know if anyone has used this kit and if it is worth buying (around $54).

I bought a kit to rebuild the generator on my '78. Consisted of a set of brushes, gasket for the gear end and an oil seal. Didn't use the oil seal since I would have had to remove the drive gear and my gen didn't appear to be leaking. Disassembled the generator, cleaned all the parts and fitted the new brushes. Now, good as new.

Thanks Eric, saw that kit too on J&P's web site. I think it goes for around $15. I will probably go that route. Sounds like brushes are my main components to replace.

If the brushes are 1/2" or longer they are good. I would just clean it up and use it. I too have a backup gen. Good idea. Also a backup regulator.

Gotcha Mick! After reading some of your technical advice here, I decided to start my own "backup" inventory for the ironhead.
Thanks!

I also have a extra everything, but when I am going on a long trip I carry a set of brushes with me and a small butan soldering iron in my toolbag.

IMHO if you are having gen problems 95% of all gen prob's usually are brush related either sticking or worn out or the gen is not polerized.

This is my experience also. One time tho i had to replace the armature. Very expensive. I think it was around $160 plus our quite lovely Canadian taxes for a total of about $180.00. I would have been better off to pick up a used gen.
