Saturday April 2, 2011

My 17 year old son Eric and I spent a night in Detroit this weekend.

It was the first time since my wife and I separated that I was going to spend some time alone with him.

I was hoping at some point he would would want to talk about things.

Thanks to sportsterdude248 for getting the tickets to the Red Wings game on Sunday as they are Eric's favorite team.

We dropped in to see Perry and his family and checked out the small arsenal of weapons, another one of Eric's favorite things.

We stayed at the downtown Marriott in Detroit, right across from the Global Headquarters for General Motors

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/sportster1200/Detroit089.jpg

Eric and I are really not well suited as travel partners, I wake up at 6am and he stays up til 2:00 am and sleeps until noon. But we worked it out.

I was soundly sleeping by 11:00 pm, Eric was up until 2:00 am, but not watching tv. He ordered room service and was watching the activity out of the window. The empty parking lots had filled with cars and people attending the bar (grey building lower left in the pic below) at closing time people flooded the streets, lots of fights and police cars chasing the bad guys. Just like watching cops he said.

He also suggested that the police keep someone on a roof top as he could see lots of things going down that the cops had missed:shhhh

Great pics and thanks for sharing. Although just so people don't get the wrong idea.....Detroit has a lot of this too:

:rolleyes:Yes, no question large parts of Detroit are burned out, basically the sports teams and casino's are the only attraction and they don't help the downtown because they are a cocoon, you don't need to leave to spend your money.

Greektown was decent but a small area.

No one lives downtown so its dead.

Thanks for the comment :)

I heard they're talking about bulldozing neighborhoods and turning them into mini farms.

They are trying to which is a cool idea. Except the city council is so oblivious it will never happen. Corruption is a huge problem in Detroit and the money will disappear before anything good can be done with it. Seen it happen to many times.

The People mover is a elevated train that runs through the downtown area in a circle. Kinda reminds me the train Blain in Stephen Kings book series the Dark Tower.

Blain the Train is a Pain

The train appears to be unmanned and we had a little incident on it.

http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc205/sportster1200/Detroit063.jpg

We hopped on the people mover with a couple of other folks (one of them in the pic below with Eric) and ran into a tall very nervous fellow. My antenna trained from years of being in the collection and eviction business immediately told me to watch it.

After watching for a while I noticed that he kept fiddling with his left pocket and then noticed what looked like the butt of a gun. At the next stop I grabbed Eric and we hopped back off.

The other couple noticed what we did and followed suit.
We sat and chatted while waiting for the next train and found out that they were from Ohio.

Other than that wherever we went people were friendly and we didn't have any problems

So during the game I asked Perry a question regarding his beloved Wings.

Who was the captain of the Wings when they last won the Stanley Cup in 2008?
He thought it was Stevie Y a Canadian.

Everyone thinks that the team with the best skilled players that have incredible heart, experience and luck win the Stanley Cup. When captains are chosen for a team, the franchise usually looks for leadership, grit and someone who can sell to the fans. According to history, Stanley Cup champions are won by teams that have captains born in Canada.

My homework shows me that only one Stanley Cup has gone to a non-Canadian captain in its entire history. That went to American born Derian Hatcher and his Dallas Stars in the 1998-99 NHL season.

It is quite amazing that not one European born captain has won a cup. Edit, turns out Lidstrom was the Captain in 2008

So my point is that in order for the Wings to win the cup they and their Captain Nik Lidstrom will need to go against over 100 years of history. Edit, my point is mute

One of the best parts of the trip was still to come,

on the 3 hour home drive, Eric started to talk about what was happening in his and our lives. I had to wait a whole weekend for this to happen. I could have asked him the questions, but I know I would have received the pat teenager answers. So we had a really good talk and a great weekend.

Thanks again to Perry and his son Tyler for looking after us.

Ahem (clearing throat)....that would be THE Captain....Stevie Yzerman! If you are gonna be prancing around MI you gotta learn the language! ;)

Actually....Lidstrom did win the cup as the Captain in 08'....Stevie had retired....first European to do so.

That went to American born Derian Hatcher and his Dallas Stars in the 1998-99 NHL season.

....and Michigan Native. I played him in roller hockey once....that is one tall boy!...even without the blades on!

Thanks for the pics, but Detroit looks like a ghost town, not many cars on the streets.

In Detroit very few people live "downtown", there are some very nice Riverfront Apartments and Condos, but on the weekends the business area is a Ghost town. People go to Sporting events and Casinos, but there is no real shopping or eating activity until Monday morning in the bussiness district. Trust me, I used to take a Semi through the Detroit/Windsor tunnel 4 times a day on weekdays and the traffic was intense. The tunnel runs right next to the Ren Cen and it was a major P.I.A.. The Co. I drove for bought 200 special "low"trailers so they could save money forcing us through the tunnel instead of over the Ambassador bridge to Canada.

To get good pics out of a moving car, put the camera on the sport setting, faster shutter speed and less shaking/vibration/blurring.
