View Full Version : Will stock 04-05 XL1200 cams fit in an 04-05 883?
Turbota 28th December 2004, 00:21 I was just thinking ... Since the stock 04-05 XL1200s use the higher performance "W" cams that are in fact the same cams that were in the 1200-S bikes, would they be a bolt-in replacement for an 883?
If so, I would think anyone doing a 883-1200 conversion that don't want to install aftermarket Andrews cams or the high reving SE cams would like a set of these, especially for the torque they make at lower revs (and the much cheaper price).
Certainly they are more agressive than the stock 883 cams ... that I think are not big enough for 1200cc engines.
One other thing, since these engines use roller lifters, a set of low mileage 04-05 XL1200 roller cams would be no problem re-using in another engine and would not have any wear marks (at least the 1200 cams I took out of my engine are in perfect condition)
Is this a good option for someone making the conversion that still wants lots of low end torque and much better overall performance than the stock 883 cams can provide?
Ron,
barry1967 28th December 2004, 01:17 Not to change the sublect turbota but, have you re-dyno'd her yet?
Turbota 28th December 2004, 02:21 I dyno'd again ... Two problems: The guy that ran the dyno before wasn't there. The guy that dyno'd it this time shut it down at 6,000 revs. I didn't realize it until I looked at the chart after he was finished. I was upset but I didn't want to argue with him. In fact, he had me stand outside of the little area the dyno was set up in .... What's with that?
The change of jets I made after the cam install caused the air/fuel to stay steady at 11.0 to 1 from 2,000 to 6,000.
Pig rich .... So, I went home and put the 170 main jet back in it. I am taking it to Arrowhead H-D to dyno this next time. Should be later this week. I will post the chart then.
The numbers sucked since it was so rich and the idiot shuts down the bike at 6,000 while the HP was still climbing .... So, next time it goes all the way to about 6,800 and it ain't going to be rich anymore.
It made 72 rwhp, but again, the guy didn't give it a chance ... and it just can't make power running rich like that.
I really thought that I would need a bigger main jet with the cam change ... I was wrong! ..... That's what I get for 'thinking'.
Turbota 28th December 2004, 02:36 I really should use the same dyno .... But I am really fed-up with the way they do things. I'm NOT going back!
Jeeeze, when I used to take my LS1 (98 Trans-Am) to the dyno, the folks would let me run the car myself. They would run the computor. I think alot of these motorcycle shops have "attitude" problems ... Maybe it's a "better than thou" attitude! Oh well ... Anyway, it's alot different from the car shops with dynos, I can tell you that!
barry1967 28th December 2004, 03:42 170 and your rich. WOW I'm running a 48 and a 185 and it runs great. Please let me know when you get some numbers. I got my 883 heads and can't wait to get em done and then get em on. Just tight on cash right now.
Turbota 28th December 2004, 04:05 I had a 170. Then put in the 180 after the cam change ... Now back to the 170 again.
45 slow jet
DynoJet needle ... It seems to be real thin

That's called "INSURANCE POLICY". Just about all policies have a clause in there, that prevent's the customer from being in the shop area. The tech was doing CYA. Or is that CYAP????
biggdann 5th January 2005, 05:28 What are the lift and duration nos. for the cams?...thks, Dan
Turbota 5th January 2005, 06:23 04-05 XL1200 cams:
223 / 240 duration @ .053" Lift
.476" / .476" lift
SportsterSpive 5th January 2005, 06:39 Just for info, i posted my dyno run in the dyno room.

That bike of yours should pull like a freight train! :)
barry1967 6th January 2005, 03:10 How about yours bota? Any luck with the dyno guys yet?
Turbota 6th January 2005, 03:22 Sounds like a cop-out .... But it's been raining here for the last 2 days. The bike has not been out of the garage .... Maybe tomorrow
barry1967 6th January 2005, 03:35 No problem. I er uh have a flat, or er a dead battery, or uh, my headlight broke, or I uh have to rub the old lady's feet. LOL
Turbota 6th January 2005, 04:25 Did you know that we had a hail storm here in Phoenix yesterday .... I didn't think so :)
Shu 6th January 2005, 04:28 Tubota, Forgive me for smiling when the valley of the sun has seen so much rain lately:) I was talking to my brother the other night and it was HAILING there! Made me smile since he is always so happy with the weather out there and I am stuck in Illinois watching the sleet and snow cover the ground....and now he is probably out riding his bike and playing with the NOS button....I guess he's the one smiling again today:)
Also, when you find a GOOD dyno shop out there, let me know so I can give him the scoop. He is wanting to do another run with the NOS to see if he has got it fine tuned now.
Shu
