View Full Version : Who's running w/o turn signals?

I'll refrain from posting under electrical/accessories forum until I get a general idea what some of you others are running. I have a 00 model with the large 3 in. X 3.5 in. turn signals. I am wanting to clean things up on both ends of the bike, but not sure of all the options. The rear of the bike seems to present the challenge. The "duece" kit would be better, but not by a lot. The wedge markers look pretty trick, but some of the cheaper ones are slightly wider than the fender struts which would not result in a very smooth mounting set-up and I don't really want to do any drilling in the fender under the struts. I also would like the ability to return to stock if the need be. So I am thinking rear signal removal, covering holes with the fender strut covers I have seen in JP catalog and maybe go with fork mounting on the front or possibly the mirrors with the built-in signal LEDs. I am not really concerned with the law (AL doesn't require turn signals) and I seldom ride at night. Any suggestions?

Of course, my '01 has them. To be honest, I have been running with them for so long that I can't imagine going without; not to mention that would make a bike not street legal here and you would get nabbed non-stop.

Wannabe- you have to do what's right for you, but I feel like it gives me half a chance against getting rear-ended by having a blinking light on the back of my scoot.

I ride in a fair amount of traffic, and the freaking cagers around here drive like its Death Race 2000.

Maybe if you do your riding out in the country it's not such a big deal... I'm keepin' mine. Good luck & ride safe if you choose to ditch 'em.

I agree, although I don't think they are required here in Texas, and I've seen lots of hard core riders without them, I do a lot of riding on Houston freeways and the cagers here are just plain psycho. Anything that makes me esier to see is a blessing. Wouldn't dream of dumping mine.

I run a 74 XLCH...Like flathead45 I don't have them either....never did! I usually don't signal much, I just get the hell out of the way as quickly as possible. But...thats me. If they ever come out with a DOT signal for going straight...I might put it on....then maybe all those a##holes that make last second left-hand turns into the Supermarkets would notice me coming towards them.
There's a lot of cool small LED turn signals designs out there today that are made for the newer EVO Sporties. Some blend in with the Evos sheetmetal to a point where they're not even that noticeable. Beside the HD Factory stuff.....Check out the Aftermarket Mfgrs offerings. Go on some of the on-line websites like JP Cycle, etc....See whats available and get some prices.

My thoughts on removing them was that the cagers rarely even notice the bike, much less the blinker. Turn lanes are pretty much the norm where I ride and if not doing my short weekday commute to work I am usually in a 3-bike group that can be seen.

I think a headlight, brakelight and 1 mirror are all that are needed in AL to be legal and a tag. lol

I'll probably get smoked lenses one day, too. I need them in NYC, and a lot of the aftermarket ones I'm not crazy about. These were the cheapest I can get and they look OK.

You know, I had thought about switching out my large lenses for a pair that were more discreet but, after a while, they grew on me. It is just part of my bikes character, I guess.

I too drive in Houston and I usually don't use them during the day (Texas does not require them). Beside, most drivers in Houston have no idea what a red light is.

At night I alway use them along with watching my back side.

Got rid of it end of the season. I had the Kellermanns at the front and the ones from a Deuce at the back. A Kellermann broke (badly engineered) and replacement was too expensive. Now I my bike is w/o it and looks much cleaner. ;)

You can go to mini markers and clean the look up a bit or the ox eyes that go in the bar ends. They are small and can be seen from both sides. Makes the need for rear signals unnec. and you can see when they are on.

I would like to run without indicators, I never had them on my old Triumphs but after checking with the M.O.T. test pages here, anything registered after 1st August 1986 has to be fitted with indicators (with a few exceptions for off roaders) I'm sure I read it right if not someone will let me know.
Not only does it cut down on the wiring :) but sometimes car drivers react better to hand gestures (whether it be an open palm, one finger, two fingers or a shaken fist) rather than a blinking light.

Wannabe,

If you want to run without rear signals, you're probably going to have to buy one of those Badlands turn signal modules if you want the front lights to keep flashing. The laws for AL sound about like the laws in AZ. You can even make quads & 2-stroke dirtbikes street legal here.

Though I like the clean looks sans signals, it's just one more reason for da man to pull you over and give you a cup o' hassle.

I have always thought of bikes like art, they both have a message and a meaning. So, stand back and absorb the message the bike's owner was trying to offer. I like lights and my 04 Roadster looks very nice with the new bullets and their respective lense covers however, I have seen bikes that look very nice with the smaller low profile lights. In any case, it's a matter of the specific laws we must follow and personal preference. So, use your imagination and go for it. Remember, bikes all look the same until they leave the dealer, after that, they clearly develop a character of their own.
