XLF Weekly Story - The COLD Ride - Will Eberle
- By XL Forum Member FLSKEVIN
The Ride
I remember one very cold February afternoon several years ago when I rode about 200 miles going from Pittsburgh to Indiana, PA and back to visit with Mom just before she died. She was in a nursing home and I knew I really needed make the trip, but didn't have enough money for gas to drive my truck up there and back. It was about 34°, cloudy and looked like it might snow soon but had held off. The roads were clear, so I put my heated vest and a head sock on and stuffed all the wool I owned under full leathers. Then, buckling on a full face helmet and face shield and pulling on my heaviest gloves, I fired up the Sporty, hopped on and took off. The ride was almost 100 miles each way. I wasn't too cold on the way up at 60 mph or so and I had a pretty good visit with Mom once I got there. Her Alzheimer's must have been in remission that afternoon since we were able to communicate fairly well, although her voice was really raspy. I got there at about two in the afternoon and wound up staying a little less than an hour. Spending time with her had become REAL hard toward the end with her health worsening and her mental state deteriorating more each time I saw her. My mother had been a remarkably fit and extremely intelligent woman her whole life and neither of us were able to deal very well with the ravages of time.
I kept checking the weather out the window and finally, just before 3:00, decided I better not wait any longer if I was going to get home without getting stuck in a snow storm. I said my goodbyes to Mom, pretty much my final ones as it turned out, got back into my gear, mounted the Sporty and headed south. The sky looked as though snow would start falling any minute and I was 2 hours away from home, so I pushed to 85+ mph wherever I had the open highway. After almost an hour, with wind-chill from the low temperature and speed blasting at my hands, they felt like lumps of ice, or rather didn't feel ANYTHING except numb. I was worried about frostbite until I thought of using the hot engine for warmth. I stopped, wrapped both gloved palms around the cylinders and gradually the feeling returned to my hands. After 5 or 10 minutes, I had some mobility back in my fingers and roared on down the road once more. For the rest of the trip, I kept putting first one hand then the other on the engine every few minutes as I rode and my hands stayed warm enough to be usable until I got safely in my driveway about dark.
The next morning I went to the local HD dealer and bought a pair of heated gloves with the correct wiring harness to connect them to the electric vest's controller.
