View Full Version : Pledge?
deadeye 7th August 2005, 08:11 I stopped tonight for fuel, and after fueling went inside to clean the faceshield on my helmet (damn bugs ;) ) A guy came up to me and told me that they use Pledge on his stock car racin buddy's goggles. He said that "stuff don't stick, and they don't fog up". Now this guy didn't have no teeth :D so I wouldn't take dental advice from him, but not sure what to think of the "pledge" advice. Anyone heard of this or tried this?

BarAndShield 7th August 2005, 14:52 I've heard this before, but never tried it.... lemony fresh too :)
SportsterBart 7th August 2005, 15:03 Used car dealers use it on for a quick shine on paint, but I don't know if it's a good idea for faceshields. Wouldn't it streak or smear? It has oils in it... :dunno

willprevale 7th August 2005, 16:04 A lottta foks use it in their bikes for the same reason. I even know some that carry it and shine theiir rides at every stop. A little much if ya ask me.
As windshields go, with the oils in pledge I imagine the bugs won't stick but I'm wondering what happens in the rain.

dabronco 7th August 2005, 17:37 It fills the minute scratches and surface crazing making it clearer. I have a full face helmet that I can't get a new shield for. I use it and it does work. You just have to get one of those super soft cloths like an old t-shirt and buff it really dry so there's no oily residue.
mark883 7th August 2005, 17:47 It works....
Gary 8th August 2005, 03:19 Pledge has basically two ingrediants in it, a paint solvent and silicon. It makes your woodwork look shiny because the solvent softens the finish and then the silicon allows you to dust with a rag and it won't stick to the softened solvent.
Professional woodworkers hate pledge. It's very dificult to refinish a piece of furniture that has been polished with pledge for years because there is so much silicon embedded within the finish that new finish will often fisheye.
I think the same thing would happen over the years if you use it on the painted tins of your bike. It will eat into your finish and leave behind a nasty layer of silicon that will ruin a repainting.
It will fill in the scratches on your visor since once again it is metling the plastic and letting it reflow. I'd worry about the build up of silicon on anything that goes near your eyes. Silicon in the eyes isn't a good thing. If you use it on your visor I'd pay attention to DaBroncos comments about getting all of the silicon off.
I'd be very warry of using it on the helmet shell itself. If it can melt varnish, pollyurethane and plastics it's going to melt the material your helmet is made out of. Admittedly it'll only melt a very thing layer at a time, but it seems like a scary proposition to do anything that can weaken the structure of your helmet.

Amen I wouldnt want a mushy helmet
Jeffytune 8th August 2005, 03:28 Hi all.
Mcguires makes a polish for plastic and one for candy glass(The clear plastic on convertibles) that works well for removing scratches.
As for something to help for bugs sticking, Glass wax.
MisterB 8th August 2005, 06:57 You'll hear people tell you to run Tang through your dish washer, shine your tires with Coke, and use egg whites as a sex lubricant. I suppose if we were in the depression, it would be good to use what's around the house- but my hell... just buy the right product for the job.
jsub 8th August 2005, 14:31 In my prior life I flew & owned a Piper Cherokee. The standard advise then was to use pledge on the plexiglass windshield & I did. It did clean the bugs off & seemed to stay clean longer. I have no idea if that is still a common recomendation.

Yeah I know people have strange advice, sometimes things do work, as strange as they seem. I'll think I'll stay away from pledge, thanks for all the advice!
vicks44 9th August 2005, 04:11 I use novus plastic clean and shine on the windshield, and S100 detail and wax on the paint and both products keep bugs from sticking also both are spray on wipe off.
Greywolf 13th August 2005, 18:16 Ive heard Novus is the best but I only use mild soap and water.
