View Full Version : Idiots Guide to Uploading & Displaying Images
Shark Doctor 28th December 2004, 21:41 For those who, like me, struggled with getting images embedded into posts, here is a step-by-step guide to posting from the Forum's Image Gallery (for those who don't have a hosted web site of their own). Thanks to flathead, maddog, and others who are savvy:
UPLOADING
1. Identify the image you wish to upload to your area on the "XL Photo Gallery" found on the upper left of the main Forum Home Page. Resize that image using some software package of your own (there are many, and some form usually comes installed on new computers) to something on the order of 600x400 pixels. Save this to some place on your machine where you can find it (sounds silly, but...).
2. Click on the XL PHOTO GALLERY LINK. In the very upper righthand corner, log in using your user name and password.
3. Next, in the same general area where you logged in to the photo gallery, click UPLOAD PHOTOS. Click on the BROWSE button and locate the file you wish to add (now you know why remembering where you put it was important?!). Then click on the bottom button UPLOAD/SUBMIT. The image will then upload.
4. Add a title and any comments, and click PROCESS IMAGE. That takes care of the uploading.
EMBEDDING THE IMAGE INTO A THREAD
1. Write the text you wish to include in a new message or reply to a message and use the ADVANCED option for either of these choices.
2. When you are ready to embed the image, go to that image in your IMAGE GALLERY. (HINT: I find that opening a second window in Explorer JUST to work on images is useful. Then I don''t lose my place in the message I am composing and I don't have to go back and forth constantly.) Click on the image you wish to embed so that you see a larger image than the thumbnail.
3. RIGHT CLICK the image. You'll notice a series of choices. Click on PROPERTIES. You will be opening a window that has, among other details, the ADDRESS of your photo. Highlight that address by dragging your mouse across the entire http:// address, and COPY it.
4. Return to your message. Highlight the yellow IMAGE icon. When the address window appears, PASTE (CTRL-V) the address of your picture file into that window, and you should be all set.

willprevale 28th December 2004, 23:28 Thanks a lot. I'll give it a shot a little later.
cypher 30th December 2004, 14:51 Wow! Thanks for the instructions.....I printed them for reference. What a great picture for your bike!! I would love to see what it looks like when done. You might have to do to your bike what OCC did to their latest bike--add a shark fin and some teeth.
Shark Doctor 30th December 2004, 16:17 cypher-
I'll probably pass on the fin and teeth, but I'm having some custom engraving (based on the same photo) done to the air cleaner... It's a "work in progress" (but aren't they all?!), and, as soon as some of the tin comes home, I'll post updates. Been a labor of love, to be sure!
Gyahmers 2nd January 2005, 04:55 Those upload instruction were really helpfull, thx for the post.
I look forward to your wip pics when your done.
Shark Doctor 3rd January 2005, 02:08 Thanks... glad they helped.
I'm hoping for pieces and parts to find their way home by end of Jan so I can get started... will post then.
thunderpaw 6th January 2005, 01:55 Thanks for the "idiot's guide"! (I needed it!)

cool
Shark Doctor 9th February 2005, 23:34 Thanks. It's a personal favorite I've used in several other places (yup! it's copyrighted). If you haven't seen other threads, my paint job uses this photo wrapped around the tank, faded to deep blue and black, and carries this concept to the fenders...
Should have pix soon... and tins soon after!
chevypowered 9th March 2005, 07:31 I must be an Uber Idiot.Been trying to put an image in a thread and I keep getting linked text to the image only.?????????????
af_sting 10th March 2005, 10:22 Not sure why I can't upload images to my gallery. Here is a sample image:
http://teoulmoon.servehttp.com/pics/bonfire.jpg
I've tried uploading as a file and as a url, but no luck. I get no error messages either. It simply dumps me at a blank screen with the xlforum banner on top.
It gives the following url if it helps you:
http://xlforum.net/photopost/bulkupload.php?ppaction=addphotos&do=preview&photopath=1765&upuser=¬ify=yes&defcat=500&deftitle=&defdesc=&numprocess=10&dthumbs=
At first I thought it might be a firewall issue so I placed my serve in the DMZ to make sure and it still didn't work. I tried uplaoding from 2 different places (home and work) but I've had no luck there either. Any help is appreciated.

AF-that's what happens to me, too. Try highlighting the area under the banner with your mouse....that's where I find the embedded error message....it's not visible until I click and drag over the area.
Wish it weren't so :(

xllent01 10th March 2005, 23:10 Is this the image you are looking for? worked for me.

wabiker 27th April 2005, 21:10 ...Uh... what do embedded mean
Kath 27th April 2005, 21:26 Embedded (as far as images) means putting a picture directly into your post, instead of as an attachment that needs to be clicked on and opened up. :)
Sporting Lad 25th March 2008, 02:14 OK, I can post pics; I even got my Profile Pic goin' on, but at the moment I'm working on getting my Signature pic to be part of my signature. I've gotten as far as seeing the pic I want to accompany my signature appearing when I click on "Edit signature" in my PC. It looks fine. Yet when one of my posts comes up, there's the text of my signature as before, but now with [SIGPIC] at the end.
No actual image. I'm sure there must be some step I've overlooked...but what? :wtf
If you know the answer you can PM me. Or post.

jbthebuckeye 19th May 2008, 15:27 I think I'm losing it. I read the how to create a album...however I do not see where to click in my control panel. Am I missing something? Any help???
Billsxl1200c 19th May 2008, 16:20 What a great post!! Thanks!!!
Shadow 28th May 2008, 04:34 I uploaded the image to my gallery and it said it was uploaded successfully, and when you click on my gallery it show the pic as a thumbnail, however when you click on the thumbnail to see it bigger it just gives me a big grey bllock instead of the picture?
Can anyone help?
Shadow - I tried to go to your gallery and it said it was password protected. Never saw that before, but can you try removing it?
Shadow 28th May 2008, 05:17 883xl - Thanks for mentioning that it was password protected that actually fixed the problem........SORT OF. In the album section there is an edit option and if you click that you can edit various items concerning that album, in there there is an option to select to have your gallery private, I had done that as I wanted to practice uploading different pictures before I allowed everyone to see them.
When you asked if I could remove that I did and then it enabled me to see the photos correctly, so I can fix it so everyone is able to see them when I am done and ready to make it public but there are a couple of issues I see with it being set up that way:
1) I didn't know when you select that option and click to save changes that a password is randomly assigned to your gallery, it gives you no prompts or tells you that it has occurred. It will save the settings and re-display the edit screen but it says nothing about a password. If you go out of that screen and then back in it then it will tell you there is a password, what the current password is, and it also has an option to chage it.
2) The other issue I found was that when the album is set to private and has a password set to view the photos if you click on the photo it gives you no prompts and I see no where to enter a password, you just get a blank grey block. That was why I was seeing the grey block. I know now from you post at least other people are getting a prompt saying it is password protected but it does not give the owner of the album that prompt or a place to enter the password and view the photo.
So now I guess my question is if you find an album that is password protected or you protect your own where do you enter the password to view the photos?
LLOYD883 28th May 2008, 15:35 Here is mine. A piece of wood, a few saw cuts, a little whittling, a half an hour and voila, a choke knob holder with detents. :D

Shadow 28th May 2008, 21:46 LLoyd883 - I think you may have posted this in the wrong thread, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand?
LLOYD883 28th May 2008, 22:10 That' exactly what I did, but since this is the IDIOT'S guide, I guess it's alright.

The easiest way to do this is as follows.
Open up a free account in Photobucket. From there upload whatever picture you want to share. After you've uploaded it, simply copy/paste the IMG code you will see below your picture and you picture will be there.
Another way is if you've come across a picture on the web you want to share, right click on it and copy/paste the properties and paste it where you click on "Insert Image" but what I do is delete the "http://" before pasting.
Hope this helps!!

Actually, I did that......that is why I am so frustrated! LOL. I tried it from Photobucket and that didn't work so I uploaded to the gallery....ugh! It is working on other forums I belong to so I can't figure out why it won't work here? very odd.
Update - got it - thanks! the IMG codes were put in twice when I copied and pasted and then opened the image tag. Thanks for your help!!!
dre986 22nd October 2008, 20:37 Okay. I got the pic in the photo galary. I even made a photo of it twice by accident. How do I get it to my appear next to my username. Top left of a post?

You have to upload it as an Avitar. Go into your User CP (see links across top), then into Edit Avitar (see links along side), then select "Use Custom Avitar". You can upload it from your PC, or point to the web address of the image. (no tags, just the address like http://pics.com/mypic.jpg) I think it's easier to upload from your PC. (option 2) Can't be any bigger than 150 x 150 though.

dre986 22nd October 2008, 21:00 I'm probably the biggest idiot in this one. I'm not PC friendlyl. I know firearms, not PC's. I'll see if my wifee can walk me through it. Thanks though. I'm lost.
dre986 22nd October 2008, 22:09 Thanks 883xl. I was just blind.
