View Full Version : Textile gear
deadeye 7th August 2005, 08:56 I've worn leather for years, but I'm thinking of getting a set of textile riding gear. Anyone have any comments on what to look for or what is good or bad? I've had my eye on a Joe Rocket atomic 2.0, 4.0, or 6.0 jacket and pants. They claim these are 100% waterproof, which I am leary of, but I don't pack much, so I thought wearing these on long trips would be better than no rain suit :wonderlan Also pants would keep my boys warmer on cold nights than chaps :smoke :banana
DustyJacket 7th August 2005, 09:17 I use a Joe Rocket Alter Ego jacket and pants.
I love the zip-off panels that reveal mesh for hot weather (that's what we have in Missouri).
The waterproof liners really do work, but the jacket gets wet even thogh the liners protect you.
In cold weather, the liners keep you warm without sweating inside them.
When I "upgrade" next year, I may go with the Super Ego which is the alter ego made with leather. The best of both worlds.
deadeye 7th August 2005, 10:11 I noticed the Alter Ego jacket says it has a waterproof liner, the atomic jacket says it is 100% waterproof. I have a hard time believing anything is 100% waterproof.
I rode to Kirksville MO tonight for supper, my first time in MO on a bike. The guy that served me said he hates driving in IA, too slow :laugh I told him IA just raised the speed limit to 70 on interstates in July, and they also doubled the fines for speeding :frownone
AZbiker 8th August 2005, 20:25 I wear a Firstgear Kilimanjaro. Love it. Had it in some pretty heavy rain, and no leaks.
planb 8th August 2005, 20:39 I've got an Atomic 4.0 jacket for the Oregon winters, and it works as advertised...I took the liner out so I could use the jacket in the summer...made it about two miles and turned around and came back home...I was drenched in sweat! It will be my winter jacket! I just met another Sporty rider last week on the road...he was wearing the Firstgear Kilimanjaro...sharp jacket, and without the liner seems to be fine for summer riding...the armor seems less bulky than the 4.0, I noticed...I'm sure there are others out there that will work fine, too...it's just these are the only two I have any knowledge of...keep us posted on what you decide to get and how you like it!
whispanic 8th August 2005, 21:30 Ive always worn joe rocket gear. I have been fortunate to not have to "test" it out.
Best part about them is they are fairly inexpensive if you get um in the off season.
I went with that brand cause it looked agressive. I didnt wanna look like so sport tourer or grandpa Goldwing.
Quality is always good but I did get one with a upside down patch on it but I got the jacket @ 75% off retail!
So it worked out for me I just covered it with my own patch...
"Its a beautiful day now watch some bitch f#$K it up"
Adios
DustyJacket 8th August 2005, 23:29 Got mine at www.motorcyclecloseouts.com which has a brick-and-mortar store here in KC.
rider1951 9th August 2005, 01:23 I have a pair of Firstgear HT pants that I really like. As far as the coat goes look for something that has good vents in it.
you might also try http://www.newenough.com/index2.htm
txsporty 9th August 2005, 01:45 I've got a First Gear Tex II Jacket with the waterproof liner..

boomer 9th August 2005, 14:08 The textile jackets hands down are better for cold weather riding and keeping you dry in the rain.
Before I started selling them I bought one to try out and when it gets cold this winter the leather goes away and the textile jacket and pants come out.
If you want rain, cold or wind protection Textile jackets and pants are the best!
grancan1 9th August 2005, 14:54 I have a FirstGear Mesh- Tec II jacket that I bought from New Enough. I would have to say it is the best hot weather jacket I have worn. It is one of the new mesh jackets with a wind proof and water proof liner. I like the Mesh-Tec over some of the other jackets because the mesh is a tighter and the air still flows good and the bug guts do not spoil you shirt. They also come in tall sizes. Check out www.newenough.com. They have carry Joe Rocket, FirstGear and many others plus they have great sizing and product information.
Phil R 9th August 2005, 15:21 I switch from leather to my Aerostich Darien ballistic nylon jacket and pants when the weather cools and for long trips where rain is a possibilty.
TomW 9th August 2005, 18:42 I have to go with the First Gear HT line. I have been caught in downpours wearing it and stayed nice a dry. My gloves and leather boots however where soaked!!! Everything else dry as dry could be. The HT line has removable knee, and hip pads in the pants as well as a removable cold weather liner. The jacket is similarly designed with elbo pads.
deadeye 9th August 2005, 19:16 Wow, lots of good advise. I'll check out those websites. I'll probably get one over the winter, I figured I'd start looking now, I like to be edumacated ;)
I want to get a jacket and pants. I ride home from work at 3 am, and It is often chilly. Also lots of deer. My leather chaps leave one important area exposed :wonderlan Also I like the idea of the jack and pants zipping together, I'm always worried that if I did go down, my jacket would ride up, leaving me exposed!
boomer 10th August 2005, 01:13 The line I carry also has removable arm and shoulder pads, zip out liners.
I have gloves made out of the same material as well.
E-Man 10th August 2005, 01:29 Another thumbs up for newenough.com
Check out their closeout section for deals on last year's gear. I picked up a nice Joe Rocket textile meteor jacket and also a teknic mesh jacket (nice and cool) from them for great prices. Quick service too.

You might also want to look into some electric clothing. I have a Gerbings jacket liner and gloves. I use the electric liner all the time. If you buy a thermostat to go with it you can use it 9 months out of the year. I take it with me when I travel as the mornings and evening can get real cool out there.
