Kick all the hippies out, because california has some of the best riding avialable and is by far one of the prettiest states I have lived in. The only one prettier or at least tied would be vermont.

That's a pretty funny attitude Wicked, it's the Hippies that keep those two states so pretty. Eliminate them and industry has free rein to destroy the environment at will. It's the compromise between those nutty hippies and the land raping industrialists that keeps things from going too far in either direction.

I miss Northern California. Used to live in Richmond, but we traveled and camped a lot...redwoods, Lake Berryessa (sp?), etc. I haven't gone camping or backpacking since leaving CA. Here in South Carolina there aren't any mountain trails, it's hot as hell and the mosquitos are the size of crows.

Wicked, you need to take some leave and get on the 'Busa and tour the U.S. for awhile! You're missing quite a few other beautiful riding states out there! :tour

Well I have worked in Vermont for 8 years and I don't know where you went but there's not one part I've seen that compares to the Kalifornia Coast Line. Were you taking some killer psychedelic drugs when you were there or something? LOL!!! ;) :smoke :banana

Hi all..
Auh yes, The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
I was born and raised there, third generation.
I lived in La Habra, Whittier, Fontana and Palm Springs.

Finally just could not take the High crime rate, crappy schools, the 15 minuets a night to cover all the gang shootings, and let us not forget the high cost of living, and the tax's(7.5% personal, 8.25% sales and 1.5% Property).

I moved to Oregon for many reasons, like no sales tax, cheaper cost of living and far better school.

I do vist the asylum from time to time(To see Family) but all it does is remind me why the hell I left.

As far as the best state to ride, I must say, with all the snog and the "Tan haze" everywhere, Cali ain't it.

Oregon(At least were I am at) I have the Columbia gore to ride through, all the colours of Vermont in the fall.
We have the Cascade Mountains to run around, scenic view everywhere, and within two hours, the Oregon coast, rugged cliffs, rocky shoreline, and soft sandy beaches.

But the best part is, I live in the Portland Metro area, the largest city in the state, you can start in downtown Portland, and ride in any direction, withing 30 minuets(Tops) your in the Farm country, or National forest.

Yes, we do have that rain thing to deal with(For many months) but we do not get many snow days, and well, you don't have to shovel rain.

I loved growing up in Cali, but the Idiots and Morrans destroyed it.

:banana Love living in California (Palm Springs Area). Have lived in Iowa, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois and Indiana. It never gets boring here. If I want some snow I drive about 20 miles up into the mountain. If I want to dip my toesy in an ocean I drive a couple hours over to the Pacific. Get a thrill every time I come to an interchange on the freeways with roads going over and under each other and criss-crossing every which way possible. Incredible engineering. Wish I had become a civil engineer rather than a lawyer. However, never wish I was other person's mother other than Bert's and "Big Brother Watching". :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap :clap

Jeffytune, I went to Portland last year and I love that city. Ive thought of moving there if I could ever get out of here. Probally the only big city Ive been to that I would live in.
I do like it here except when its over 100 degree, we hit 20+ days over 100 and its a all time recorded record.:( And I get mow lawns in it.

Turfpro, as fast as areas of Oregon are growing, and as lush as it is on this west side, your expertise would sure be in demand! I have NO doubt the cost of living would be a little more sane up here, too! Do some homework if you're serious, but you're timing would be good if you do decide to give Oregon a try! And as JeffyTune has alluded, the riding isn't too shabby here other than a few rainy months in the winter, but that gives us time to work on our bikes! Some of the diehards here (Rider1951 comes to mind) ride twelve months a year, but I'm finding the older I get, the more fair weathered I get...wonder if anyone's ever done a study on that? :D

The company I work for is a wholesale distributor of sprinklers and landscape products that has locations throughout the west and our warehouses in the Pacific Northwest do well. Southern California is the largest market in the world w/ 20 million and growing people coming to a desert and stealing all of your water from up north. I haved lived all over the world and w/ it's flaws California is pretty good, just ask the 30+ million people here. Australia, the size of the US is something in the range of 20 million. If the opportunity was right, and I could get the wife to agree ( family for her) to leave I might pack up and go where it is less crowded and slower. As the Legal Mom said, there are a lot of options for us. I am getting ready to jump on my bike this morning and I don't know which way to go, mountains, desert, beach??? All of them??? I live between her and the others in Orange County so I can go to all of them pretty easily. So no matter where you live find a road, preferably untraveled and feel the wind in your face.

Southern vermont mountains when all of the trees are a different color, you don't need a coastline to be pretty.

I don't give a $hit what any of you Cali haters say. There is no better place. I live in San Diego with all year riding. Besides Hawaii, San Diego is the next biggest vacation spot. So in retrospect. Not just are the locals messing up our state but all you tourists as well. Yea it cost alot to live here but with all the sunshine, beautiful women, great places like Yosemite. I wouldn't..no, couldn't live anywhere else. Now I'm sure there are people who are saying but what about the crime or the schools. If you don't live in L.A. then it gets better the farther you get from there. I live in a small town in San Diego called Ramona. Population of 35000 people. Almost county like. Lots of horses and one of the biggest CDF Air Firefighting units in the country.

I guess in short I'm saying that if you don't like Cali then stay the hell out. If you live here and don't like it then get the hell out.

TheExecutioner is correct in saying that the farther you get from L.A. the better California gets, but California has a lot of problems right now that need to be fixed in order to make this state what it should be. I love California, and I cannot think of a better state(climate, and diversity of landscape), but sometimes I just get sick of all of the laws, the excessive amount of illegal aliens, the poorly funded schools, and the expense to live here. I may leave California some day, but once you leave its tough to come back if you want to.

As I've mentioned before, I've worked in the electronic media since I was 19 years old. I've been a street reporter, in-studio news "anchor" for radio stations, and ultimately, news director for ABC and NBC affiliates. After a long time, I just said "...screw it." I just hated the emotional drain of covering the news all the time.

I'm now working with Uncle Sam's radio & TV network, so my audience is basically the military members and their families around the world. We deal primarily with sportscasts and covering sports events which come in from around the country and we re-transmit those things to the troops.

Here are some tips for better living: Quit watching or listening to news programming.

It's not the old "ostrich-with-head-in-the-sand" mentality, it's just to stop hearing the same crap over and over again. Stop watching or listening to any "commentary" programs... everybody has an opinion...! Why should you care what a Limbaugh, or a Franken, or a Ken-and-John, or an O'Reily have to say? Why do you bother to put any credence in what some highly-paid "spokes-hole" has to say?

I'm just as concerned about news events... how those affect the country, or my local community. But just stop listening to it on the radio or turn off any channels when some clown comes on to give their personal opinions.

Since the 1960's, I've reported the same crimes, the same weather disasters, the same political corruption, the same illegal immigrants (insert country of your choice), and the same "world-going-to-hell-in-a-handbasket" comments from somebody who happened to get a microphone stuck in front of their face.

It's a far better world out there if you don't listen to loonies like me on the air all the time. Listen in for a few minutes to maybe get an update but leave it at that... Just quit listening "all the time" to what anybody says. Grow up... Get a life... Learn to study news events and how they matter, and quit waiting for your favorite "spokes hole" to tell who you should be pissed at.

Just a few thoughts from behind the news desk....
