DC/Baltimore to Adirondacks route?

Am looking to make a trip from the DC Metro area later this summer up to the Adirondacks in NY. I have no interest in riding 95, mainly because it just no fun, a non-stop slab of truck route chaos. Was thinking of taking 83N out of Baltimore to 81N out of Harrisburg to 88E out of Binghamton. Is 81 in PA the same flavor as 95? Any thoughts or advice welcome. Thanks,
