I'll bet you were thinking I would not get the XLF Weekly Bulletin out this week.

I was gonna try and get the bulletin out on time on Sunday but I did not want you to get spoiled :-)

On The XL Forum we are discussing the creation of an International Sportster Day and are looking for your input on which day we should declare as International Sportster Day. Give us your ideas here: http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/showthread.php?t=108161 .

XLF Weekly Story - Need Help? - Pastor Jim Baily
- By XL Forum Member meemabeepa

This weeks story comes to us from a man of faith. Now I am not what anyone condsider a religious person and The XL Forum is not, by a long shot, what people would consider a religious website. But Jim Bailey is a man of the Christian faith and has a unique way of combining his faith with his enthusiasm for Sportster motorcycles. Even though I am not a religous person, and many of us are not, sometimes I like to listen to the wisdom that many men of faith have to give us. If you are turned off by religious messages please skip this weeks stories, or better yet, send me your own Sportster or Buell story!

Need Help

Just for the record, I like my old motorcycle. Not that I wouldn’t enjoy a new one; I just can’t see spending upwards of $15,000 for a toy, even if it is a useful and enjoyable toy. Just for the record, that last sentence is one of the tricks I use to keep me from anteing up the scratch for a full-size Harley softtail with springer front end. The other trick is remembering what I have seen when I’ve gone overseas. If I had to push my bike everywhere, I would still be better off than most of the people I’ve met on my mission trips.

Speaking of pushing my bike, yesterday was a beautiful day for a ride, so I fired up my old Sporty, and headed out for a pastoral visit. I arrived at my destination, visited for awhile, prayed, and got up to leave. Which is more than my bike did. I suited up—jacket, helmet, gloves; hopped on, turned on the gas, set the choke, turned the key, hit the ignition…nothing. Not a pop, cough, or wheeze. That bike was D-E-A-D, dead! I fiddled, cajoled, did everything but cuss at it (I was on a pastoral call, you know!). Finally, I had to admit failure and call for backup. Thank God for cell phones.

Linda (my ever-patient wife) came to the rescue, with battery charger, extension cords, and even a kind word and a smile. I hooked everything up, turned the key, hit the switch…NOTHING! Well, not quite. The charger needle would bury itself for about 3 seconds. Then the circuit breaker kicked in with a nice little “ping!” and shut everything down. Not a pop, sputter, or even a click. Well, we were expected at dinner in about ten minutes, so I had to leave everything there for awhile, and settle for a ride in her Toyota. After dinner, we went back to see if there were any fix to the problem.

Fortunately, I was at the home of my good friend, Rick Pearson, who arrived home from work while we were eating supper, and happened to have a BATTERY CHARGER! Not the wimpy little box like I had; his was the Abrams M1 tank of battery chargers. We hooked that baby up, hit the starter, and waited for my battery to explode. It did not; said bike roared to life, and I was on my way home.

Arriving safely home (no, I did not have to push—I’ll save that story for another article), I immediately set to figuring out what was wrong. This in itself would prove to be a considerable challenge, since you could put my sum total of electrical system knowledge inside the period at the end of this sentence, with room left over. Suffice it to say, that 45 minutes later, the only closer I was to solving this mystery was having removed the seat to inspect a couple relays (which amounted to the proverbial kicking of the tires and muttering, “looks like the flambulator has a little too much pleecocky in the thorbin”), which is to say, I was stumped. Completely flummoxed, but still no cuss words. The Holy Spirit is doing his work!

Now I am not totally stupid. I have learned that when completely stymied, call in the reinforcements, meaning, someone who knows what they are doing. Next morning, I called my buddy Rick, from (of all places) Bangtail Custom Cycle. Close your eyes and picture this guy… Yep, you’ve got it! I described the problem, and Rick said, “It’s one of two things…” and proceeded to tell me what to do about it. He had it nailed, and I was soon up and running.

“Why,” you ask, “have I gone into such agonizing detail regarding my biking mishaps?” I’ll tell you:

We all need help. Sometimes through our own stupidity, sometimes through our stubbornness and sinfulness, and sometimes through events we had little say in and no control over. Sooner or later, we all need help. You may have done the best you knew how with what you were given. Maybe you didn’t start life with that brand-new custom Harley Big Twin. Maybe you had to settle for a busted-up 30 year old Sportster or (gasp!) even worse, a Honda. Whatever your situation, you know even new stuff breaks, and when it comes to fixing life, most of us are all thumbs. That’s where God comes in. He not only knows what to do, he doe it for us, and offers the benefit of his love and expertise to us free of charge—it’s called grace. All we have to do is admit that our ride is down, and make the call for help. Maybe your present problem isn’t that big, and you can get up and running simply by stopping kicking the tires long enough to listen to what he says. Maybe you’ve been so broken by life that you need someone
to load you up and carry you to God. Either way, he is the One who knows how to fix what’s broken. Oh, by the way, he does Rick one better. He makes house calls, and he’s already paid the bill.

This is Pastor Jim's Ironhead.

Joke of the Week - The Patch - Submitted by XLF Member Hot Rod Sporty

If you are like me, after reading this joke you will think Hot Rod Sporty needs to be banned from the forum for a few days....or weeks! :-)

Bubba and Earl were driving down the road drinking a couple of Budweiser's.

Bubba Said "Looky thar up ahead Earl, it's a police roadblock!!

We're gonna get busted fer drinkin' these here beers.

"Don't worry," Earl said. "We'll pull over and finish drinkin' these beers, then peel off the label and stick it to our foreheads and then throw the bottles under the seat. Just let me do the talkin'."

They finished their beers, threw the empties out of sight, and put the labels on each of their foreheads.

When they reached the roadblock, the sheriff said, "Howdy boys, ya'll been drinkin'?"

"No sir," said Earl while pointing at the labels. "Me and Bubba's on the patch!"
