...died today. Probably the biggest badass to put a leg over a Sportster (he used modifed Xr750s for a lot of his jumps). RIP.

Indeed. An icon of American motorcycle culture is gone. It will be a long time before we see his like again. And as the Angels on his beloved Harleys bear him to his eternal home, may he rest in peace.

I saw him jump a shitload of something at the Astrodome in Houston, after he made his speech and walked off, an identical motorcade came in and George Hamilton, in an Evel suit, got out and made the same speech for the movie. It was Nickle Beer Nite and it was wonderful.
Long live the Evel!

Got Evel's autograph at a showing of the Hamilton movie! Made a lot of ramps and jumped my bicycle over a lot of things 'cause of him!

Any of you remember the interview between Sportscaster genius Jim Rome and Evel Knievel?

------

I remember the last time I saw Evel try to do something no one else had done, the infamous jump over Snake River Canyon in Idaho. It was live on TV, per per view, and I was as fascinated as anyone else to think he was going to give this a shot. I never thought he could make it; turns out that, in later interviews, he admitted that he didn’t think he could do it either, because he didn’t believe he could get enough speed out of his motorcycle to have a shot. They had added rocket boosters to the motorcycle in an attempt to help give him more speed, and they hadn’t worked in the two tests, but he decided he was going to go through with it anyway. When asked by the interviewer Jim Rome many years later why he went through with it, his response was pure moxie: “Why? I’m Evel Freaking Knievel!”

I too built and jumped many ramps on my bicycle as a kid because of Evel Knievel. R.I.P. and thanks for the great memories.

This actually has me a little messed up. Evel was my childhood hero. While the other kids were riding around on their cool Schwinn Stingrays, I was pining for a Honda Trail 70-so I could jump my mom's car.

Evel was a true 'everyman's' hero.

I think it is now time for the charter recitation of the Evel Knievel poem. This has been a semi-regular in my blog, but this seems to be a good time to unveil it in the XLForum......

Evel Knievel was a really cool guy
He launched his Sporty in-to the sky
Women shrieked, and strong men cried
Cuz he wiped out on landing-
and caught a footpeg in the eye

Evel Knievel had big brass balls
He jumped over buildings
and crashed through walls
He sneered at mountains,
and shopping malls

Evel Kneivel could kick some ass
With his tires full of air
And his tank full of gas

Evel Kneviel was as cool as can be
With his jumpsuit, his ramp
And his cool SPORTY!

I destroyed a yz125 trying to jump like him. Used to piss my mom off cuzz I was buying new rims, and a new set of forks - twice, jumping creeks and even a chevy caprice once.

She used to tell me that I was gonna kill myself trying to be like him.

Theres only ever gonna be one like him.

My childhood hero too. Who else had one of these?

Sad to see him go. I was a young boy when I sat on my roof and watched him attempt the jump over the Snake River Canyon. Thanks to his event, I was able to raise nearly $8,000 dollars for our YMCA from the aluminum cans all the bikers left behind while they were partying for several months leading up to his jump. We emptied out several hundred 55 gal barrels and painted "Aluminum Cans" on the side of them. Each day we would go out in our 5 ton truck and pickup the cans. I'm surprised after that experience I would ever drink beer. Image the thousands of cans I had to crush everyday that still had old, beer and spit in them and been sitting in the hot sun all day, what a smell. What I remember most was the evening after it was all over standing on the top of the dirt ramp he used to make his jump. You wouldn't believe how far across the canyon his jump would have been and he picked a pretty narrow area. I got to touch a little bit of history. I took my kids to see his jump sight this last summer. Brought back a lot of memories. RIP Evil.

Evil Knievel is and will always be an American icon. Like Paul Bunyon, larger than life and true to the American spirit. Long live Evil Knievel in our harts and souls. His legacy will live forever.
