I noticed that some of the 08 Sportsters, like the 883 standard and 883L no longer come with a chrome kickstand. The blank canvas just got a little blanker.
That's one less thing we're getting for our money, but I'm SURE you'll be happy to sell one off the wall for an additional cost.
What's for next year?...plastic side covers?

Don't think that we don't notice these things.

It makes me glad I got an 06 and so much less likely to EVER trade it in for a newer one.

Funny, cause the kickstand is the one thing that I could care less if it were chrome or black. As far as offering a chrome one, that is only the first step, I'd bet the MOCO will offer a color matched one at twice the price of the black one;) But if you get a black bike, it is already color matched LOL;)

The stock side covers are black, but you can get colour matched side covers in … black. :wtf

Yep, I haven't checked but I think they claim that the black parts that are stock are not Vivid Black, but more of a match to the frame black and so they make color matched Vivid Black ones.....man I am glad I have a color blindness issue:clap. All the black parts on my bike matched perfectly right out of the HD crate :)

No in all serious, I haven't looked at my HD Wish Books Color matched section to see if they offer things in vivid black or not, but I would not be surprised.

That will probably take a lot longer than 2 years if it ever happens. I'm sure that if it does, it will have more to do with being the last year they were carbed than anything else. Rubber mounted/carbureted Sportsers were only made for 3 years. I'm sure that will mean a lot in 20 years but right now I just enjoy riding.

About the kickstand...
It would be one thing if they were always black or if it were a themed bike like the Nightster. It's MUCH MORE THAN JUST A KICK STAND to me but rather a sign of the direction they are headed. This from a company that prides it's self on fit and finish? It's just one more part they'd rather sell you off the wall than give it to you with the bike, plus it's cheaper production. They make out both ways.
..and they think we don't notice.

Shu
5th December 2007, 23:37
Yeah, they do.
:doh:doh:doh anyone check if it is more expensive than a factory replacement standard frame black one? What a hoot!

Chrome is getting more and more expensive and I am not surprised they would blacken out a fairly unseen part. Plus now they can get some to buy a chrome replacement for $75 or more and hang the black one on their garage wall. It's a WIN WIN for the MOCO.

So does that mean they will be offering "Frame Black" sheet metal in the color shop?
"Would you like a frame black tank with vivid black flames?"
"You can't see it but I assure you it's there"

Someone has to check the price comparison of a vivid black oil tank vs. a stock replacement standard black oil tank. Do they have different part numbers? I am really curious now.

BEWARE the gold plated look should be coming back around the fad circles again sometime soon. :shhhh

I understand your concern and couldn't agree more. If they start cheapening up the the bike and it causes diminished quality and longevity. This thread would ahve a very differnet tone if it was dealing with some weaker/cheaper material being used to make the pistons/rods/crank, etc.

"Would you like a frame black tank with vivid black flames?"

Hey that would be a special limited edition and numbered paint option and cost about $1500.

Nope, the black bikes will come with a chrome jiffystand just to spite you. Nobody gets away free, NOBODY!!!

Actually, they don't do the side covers in vivid black, although they do other 'colour matched' accessories in vivid black. They do do the side covers in black pearl though.

The stock side covers (#s 66251-04 and 66252-04) cost $107 each.

The colour matched black pearl side covers some in a kit (# 66263-04BPY); both covers for $165.

The chrome covers (#s 66261-04 and 66262-04) cost $99.95 each.

So the stock ones are the most expensive, the chrome ones are cheaper, and the colour matched ones are the cheapest!

jimmyess333

I'm amazed that the chrome covers would cost the least, not because I want chrome side covers but you would think that HD would demand the most for them.

They're not the only parts where the plain stock ones cost more than the fancy aftermarket ones. Look at cams; the SE cams are considerably cheaper than the stock ones! http://www.harley-davidson-hangout.com/forum/images/smilies/zh_smilies/wtfdude.gif

Hey, I just checked out the 08 specs on an 883 to see if maybe they cut corners to keep the price of the bike with EFI the same as it was without. That's not the case since the MSRP is about $300 more than it was without EFI. But check this out, the security system is a $345 OPTION now. It was standard in 06..or at least my bike came with it.
Man, they are raking it in.

They look the same in pics, just black.
I haven't seen them in person though...

Maybe I'll stop in the dealer on the way to work tomorrow.
I can get some free popcorn and check it out.

No, Security has always been an option.

Your dealer just rolled it in with the rest of the cost of the bike if you think it was standard.

Kev

PS - I could care less if the kickstand is black or chrome, except that I'd prefer it to be black. WHAT I DO CARE ABOUT is the possibility that the MoCo is backing off on quality to hold or increase margin!

It's possible that they rolled it in.
I was on guard to nix that pesky extended warranty should it rear it's ugly head in my paperwork.
It already had the SE slip ons and air cleaner as well and I know THEY weren't standard.
Even with sales tax it was only $1,000 over MSRP so I didn't think they threw much else in besides the SE's and A/C. ..AND I got a chrome kick stand.:D
I can't get used to "Jiffy Stand".
As I stated earlier, if it was always black then so what but the CHANGE is what has me concerned. This may sound paranoid but what else has changed that's not as obvious?

From this year at least, the siren is standard too. Here are some specifications (http://www.harley-davidson.com/PR/MOT/2008/08_specs_print.asp?locale=en_GB&bmLocale=en_GB&dwp=&market=GB&family=sp&model=xl883&modelsection=specs&measureCheck=English&specTable=showall) (for the 883 standard, in this case).

In '09 the kickstand will be an option at $199.00. The Moco is one smart cookie.

Security has always been an option here.

When I went to the 13 ½” shocks I put the 883R Jiffy Stand on because it was black and rare. So now HD is putting them on everything, dam. I was going to put the gator covers on my front end but changed my mind when HD did it on the Nightsters. Keeping my scoot a bit different makes it mine. Wish HD would stop stealing my ideas. My 2¢

My 05 came equipped with the adjustable color jiffy stand. All I have to do is ride a few thousand miles and it automatically changes from chrome to flat black. :)

Didn't look...
I bought mine new in the summer of 06 and I was too into mine to look at anything else.
By the time that wore off a little, the 08's were already out.
I go to the dealer as little as possible but the last time I was there I picked up an 08 brochure to check out the new models.
It was while thumbing through the brochure I saw the kick stand.
