Try adjusting your pushrods and checking for vacuum leaks.

My own experience and that of others with the Ultima ignition is that you can set it to static timing and go; i retarded it only to help reduce pinging.
I expect the the back fireing out the carby is not from the ignition timing.

Why did you replace the ignition system ?
Was the bike running OK before you replaced the ignition system ?

... mick what setting have you got you ignition
Ultima ignition set at curve #1, RPM limit at 6000, timing retarded to 35` from the static 38` [according to my timing light], VOES installed with the VOES switch set to OFF [as required by the instructions].
I run with 91 octane as that is the highest generally available around here.
No pinging at these settings thanx to the 91 octane, the retarded timing and the VOES.
Wiseco 10:1 pistons.

What carby are you running Steve?. .. .and have you checked the float height in there?
Also what Coil are you running?. . .single?, dual? I think they call for a 2.5-3.5 OHM coil as they are a similar setup to my dyna2000i.
And is it the type with the 6 x mode switches?. ..if so what do you have all those set to?

If it was backfiring out the pipes, I'd say yeah .....timing, but backfiring out the carb,(carb farts) I'd say fuel related.

Check again carefully the instructions for setting up the initial timing. I'm not familiar with Ultim's offering but most systems employ the same procedure. Generally you set the engine so the front cylinder is at firing point, ie 45 BTDC and move the ignition unit until a led comes on (or goes out on some systems) At any rate at the point the light goes on (or off) lock down the ignition and you should be done.
If the Ultima utilises Top Dead Center like my Micro Classic you need to find TDC instead of the 45 BTDC mark. On a SPorty this will be when the rear cylinder is at TDC.

On electronic ignitions, you static time at TDC on the front cylinder and the unit takes care of the advance.

Depends on the system. The fully programmable digital systems all generally run from TDC. But a lot of systems that people refer to as "electronic" are simply optical or hall effect triggering systems and they rely on mechanical advance units. Mallory for example makes both.
Read your instructions and follow what they say carefully.

I should have specified. yes...... Electronic ignitions without mechanical advance

hi russ the carby 80 cube off a shovle i have checked the float hight i put it to the stanard sportster hight out of the manaul the coil came with the the ignition kit yeah i think they are the same as the dyna it has the 6 switches and its on curve 3 hi compression
