my buddy has this '01 X-1 that he wants to sell me. A screw came out of the air intake and went right into the rear cylinder. I found a guy to weld and grind the head back to spec and do a valve job, and I obviously need a new piston.
The cams are out, but I have everything in a box.
What kind of headache am I looking at?
Better to have a shop install everything? Just don't wanna get raped!!!
I've worked on my old Truimph, but it's a wee bit different...:)

if your just going back to stock I don't see you having any trouble if you did all your own work before.
these motors aren't that difficult to work on, get a manual and look at the procedures and then see how you feel about tackling this rebuild.

Follow the manual or look for some of CJBurr's how to's. There are a good number of people here who have done a great job photographing every step of their rebuilds.

If you rebuilt that tractor then you can do this
nope...not my tractor...
Thats' where the bike is being stored until I make up my mind.
He wants $1500 for it...even if I had to put another 1k in it, I'd only be 2500 in a streetable bike!

sounds like a good price if that's all thats wrong with it.
you should seriously get a manual and look at the procedures to get it back running.
with the right tools and the parts you're probably within 8 hours of riding it

1500 is a great price. You should be able to fix it for a lot less than a grand if you economize and spend your money wisely. Ebay is a great source of replacement parts when you are on a budget.

Seems like a good price. The rest of it looks to be in good condition.
