View Full Version : stator magnets
glenns 27th August 2005, 00:01 first time poster here would like to say hi to all.
my problem,,,,,i bought a used 1986 xl after about 50 starts the stator magnets came off jammed up and i cracked the case just above the starrter.
so i send it out new stator case welded alls fine.???? after about 30 more starts bamm magnets came off cracked case again. any ideas.
thanks glenn
ted 27th August 2005, 00:49 The big bearing in the cheap die cast trap door has wallered out the trap door allowing the clutch hub to get wobbly. Then the magnets in the hub hit the stator. The real fix is a Zippers billet door with double row bearing. A new stock door would be a band aid that works for less than 10,000 miles, then-- there ya go again. It costs a few bucks but on the 4 speeds, it is money well spent. Shifting will improve too as will primary chain noise.

glenns 27th August 2005, 01:17 ted,
thanks for ther reply does the fix you said meen i have to have the cases split to fix. or can it be done wiyhout spliting the motor. im cunfused with the trap door .
thanks glenn
ted 27th August 2005, 01:32 Transmission needs to come out. The trap door allows the trans to be taken out without splitting the cases. The transmission is mounted inside the trap door. You really need to get a service manual to make understanding the internals a bunch easier. For me pulling the trans is a pretty easy job cause I have done it a bunch in my racing years. The manual will show you how pretty completely, step-by-step. Where in this great country are you located?

ted 27th August 2005, 01:41 Here is a chitty pic of the trans from the manual. The trap door is bottom right.

Jimbo999 28th August 2005, 13:58 Now you got me worried.............I have 30K Miles on my '88. Should I be concerned about this ????????
Jimbo999 28th August 2005, 15:06 :( :feedback
BUMP
stevo 28th August 2005, 15:09 NO......................................
some go bang....some don't
Jimbo999 28th August 2005, 15:12 Is there anyway to tell that the bearing or whatever is loose and To take acton
before something bad happens ??????????
stevo 28th August 2005, 15:18 yes, no, maybe,,,,,,,,,,
Did that make it clearer???????
Just ride it..... if it starts making nasty noises or reduces the charging gets a different vibration then have a look inside......
Most don't have a prob if they're ridden "normally"
glenns 28th August 2005, 15:29 someone told me that there was an updated stator. tha magnets are rivited in not glued. but i cant find anything on of.did anyone else ever hear of this?
Jimbo999 28th August 2005, 18:43 someone told me that there was an updated stator. tha magnets are rivited in not glued. but i cant find anything on of.did anyone else ever hear of this?
yes, no, maybe,,,,,,,,,,<---------------Stevo :laugh
There's a thread somewhere on here. Try a search
glenns 28th August 2005, 18:56 ill give it a try hopefully i can find something
glenns 28th August 2005, 19:00 every search brings me back to this page :banana
ted 28th August 2005, 19:13 Jimbo, Stevo said it good. Yes,no,maybe. And yes again, the harder ya thrash it the faster you will be seeing problems. If you hear even a little strange noise in there, tear it down and look. First sign is bits of magnets on the drain plug magnet. If you see that before you get noise, you got it in time. A new stock door if ya gonna be easy on it or the heavy duty Zippers door if ya gonna be thrashing it.
Glenns's went out the secont time right away cause the "real" problem wasn't fixed.
When the bearing gets to wobbling in the door, the clutch hub gets to flopping around a lot. A new hub don't fix it alone without a door replacement too.
Ted
glenns 28th August 2005, 19:32 do i have to ghange both bearings or just the one in the trap door.
thanks glenn
L4450 2nd September 2005, 03:56 I was curious if anyone has tried V-Twins *vibration proof* clutch basket and rotor? Shelled mine recently and am hoping this along with Zippers trap door will at least give the primary cover gasket a chance to get stuck.
87 1100....taxes pd
glenns 2nd September 2005, 23:55 i was told that in order to inspect the trap door the tranny has to be taken apart. is this right.
ted 3rd September 2005, 00:09 Glenns, Yes that is right.. L4450, With the Zippers door the stock cluth hub will hold up.
Ted
glenns 3rd September 2005, 04:11 ted,
imconfused does the tranny have to be diassembled to replace the trap door. im not going for a zippers door im not going to beat on the bike i just want to be able to ride it and not have to worry about exploding magnets
L4450 4th September 2005, 00:48 Ted
I've got the tranny scattered all over the place, and it looks to me like the needle bearing on the right side of the mainshaft going through the case is fairly sloppy and the bearing in the trap door feels solid, not rough and no slop. I'm thinking V-Twins clutch basket and new bearings all around. What say you?

Well,
I'm Guilty of reving the crap out'a my bike.....In Another thread a guy said he's done 35 in 1st.............D'oh !!!! I've done almost 50 but I have an extra tooth on my chain sprocket. What I have noticed is my chain
tension varies from day to day...Some days Right on and some days loose.
Might this be an indication something in the trap is wobbly ????????
benton 6th September 2005, 16:35 I just fixed my cam follower in my 1988 at 32000 miles. The transmission and magnets were fine otherwise. If your magnets go out you're going to need a overhaul.
glenns 7th September 2005, 00:44 bikes in the shop now getting tore a part hope they find my problem. i dont want to go through this again
ted 7th September 2005, 01:39 L4450, If your magnets have hit, the bearing fit in the door is suspect. The bearing can feel great. It is the fit in the aluminum door that wallers out. Zippers door, if ya gots the $$$ is a permanant fix.
Glenns, If they tell ya they can fix it without replacing the door, make them replace it, demand they replace it. They really should have known that when the magnets were hitting the first time. It is an old known problem. You may even, in a diplomatic sort of way, suggest that if they fixed it right the first time you would be out riding rather than spending more money unnecessarily.

Do you know of any upgrade to the needle bearing at the right end of the mainshaft? Pi$$ poor design...
ted 8th September 2005, 11:50 Stock replacement bearing is all I know about.
Ted
glenns 10th September 2005, 17:18 by the time i told them to put the new trap door in they had the bike back together.
they changed the bearings and said there was nothing wrong with the trap door. i trust him hes friends with my pop and has been working on his bikes for years. the big bearing had a little play in it. seems to think we just got a defective part. i hope so will keep all posted. thanks for the help.
glenn
glenns 4th October 2005, 23:43 so far so good got about 200 mls since fix so far so good.
thanks for all your help glenn. ill keep you posted
glenns 1st April 2007, 16:21 well i got the bike running yesterday after sitting all winter. didnt sound right while it was cranking over(ive heard this sound before). so i decided to pull the primary drain plug. low n behold it was covered with chunks of magnets:censor not what i wanted to see. now im at a loss..... im not paying to get it fixed again when the problem cant be found. gonna have to sell it for parts now......not what i wanted to do either..........
