View Full Version : Eric, forgive me please
buell_fxr 3rd January 2005, 17:37 Hello Buell riders,
I would just like to share my almost complete buell modification. I took a perfectly fine running 1999 Buell X1 and, forgive me, chopped it, well sorta. The more I tore down the bike, the more I liked the way it was designed and built. Some great designing and fab work on this bike.
At first I was looking to use an FXR rear motormount, but after tearing down the buell, found it to be much stronger and better designed, so kept it in my new bike. Will keep the 3 lateral links also as well as the front FXR type motormount. I moved it down, the buell had it up top since there is no frame below the engine.
Kept the swingarm also since it was a perfect fit to the rear motormount.
After researching frames (rubber mounts only for the buell/sportster engine) I decided to build my own. That was the biggest challenge of the project. I wanted strong and light, so used 1-1/2" O.D. chromoly .095" wall. It is just a tad lighter than the same frame if made out of 1-1/4" and .120" wall, but lots stronger.http://www.geocities.com/cjhjdh/lets_paint.jpg
Gary 3rd January 2005, 18:07 That looks pretty neat. A nice hybrid design. I can't wait to see what you have in mind for the paint.

buell_fxr 16th January 2005, 03:24 To your master mechanics out there.
I am starting to put the buell custom/street fighter together after getting my parts back from paint. I have a vent/oil line hose coming from the gearcase at the rear!!! I know the transmission does not share the engine oil, so where does this line go? Help please.
I don't remember cutting this line, but it has been cut, only about 2" long but still clamped on.
I have the buell service manual, it shows a picture of the tube on top and rear of gearcase, but does not make mention of it. Thanks for your help in advance.
Pictures will follow in a few days.
barry1967 16th January 2005, 03:40 Vents back to the oil tank on a sporty. On a Buell, I'm not sure.
buell_fxr 19th January 2005, 23:29 Just about done here! Coil to mount, kickstand to add when I get it off the lift, and waiting on a 23" rear brake line. Other wise it is ready to ride, yippeeee :clap

Xhoodlum 22nd January 2005, 17:11 I think the cops will pull you over just on curiosity (looks like its going fast on the lift!)
Good luck with her! Ride safe.
883Hugger 22nd January 2005, 17:50 That is a seriously sweet looking bike. I love the streetfighter style. :urock
blueglide88 22nd January 2005, 20:32 It look pretty muscular. What does it weigh?
buell_fxr 24th January 2005, 02:25 Thanks for the kindly comments for sure!
My frame is 34 lbs, the buell was 28. The FXR steel gas tank is like a bunch, probably picked up 10 lbs over the old tank. The re-inforcements on tail section for shocks added about 2 or 3 lbs. I figure it should be maybe 40 lbs heavier. I could save 2 lbs alone by sliming down the fxr rear pivot block mounts from 1/2" to 1/4" with inserts for bolting on the blocks.
I did loose the tank cover, chin fairing, side scoop and air cleaner housing, that is like 10 lbs.
I can not make the rear brake master cylinder seal, so waiting on a rebuild kit so we can ride it. The wait is making me crazy! Should have left the brake and master cylinder bolted together and sealed while I was building, think the air ruined the seals.
buell_fxr 28th January 2005, 14:50 Barry 1967,
Thanks for the reply. I took the bike out today for an hour or so, first ride! It began puking some sport/trans oil out of the vent hose. Think I have an overfill condition but will keep an eye on it. I also will try and get that stub of a hose off and put a piece on long enough to bend back over and down at the back of engine. Still wish I knew where it went on the buell however. The next time I see a 1999 X1 I will be inspecting it for sure.
Over all it worked great, course I am biased here. My rear brake is still almost no brake, so putting in a rear caliper kit today. My seat is like 2" to high but I was starting to get sort of used to it by the end of the ride.
Although the steering felt very good at 26 degrees, I will so with 30 degrees on the next frame.
