I would like to announce that The XL Forum has just sent Kerry Lockhart (Narley) $400.00 to support his Sportster racing endeavors.

At this time Kerry has no sponsorship other then some help with the cost of parts from Edelbrock.

Kerry has done an AWESOME job this year in the CMDRA Supergas class. You can see here that Kerry is currently tied for 1st with only one more race to go for the season: http://www.cmdra.com/points.html

For more into on the CMDRA go here: http://www.cmdra.com/index2.html

I would also like to get get a group of members together as a committee to come up with ways that we can continue to support Kerry. I foresee the committee organizing fund raising drives through the sale of patchs, t-shirts, etc...

If you are interested in becoming part of this committee please PM or email me.

What a great idea, Bert! Not only are you/we helping an XL member, we're promoting Sporties and it's legend! I have no experience in helping you in this endeavor, but I've got the enthusiasm to assist you any way I can, so please put my name down as a candidate! I remember Narley saying once how he has to drive hours into Washington to get parts...that's dedication to the sport, but it'd be nice to make things a little easier for him so he can concentrate more on racing...I guess that's what sponsorships do! Who knows? With Narley being such a chick magnet with his race Sporty, maybe he can pass on ones that he can't handle to us! :D

Well, I also do not know what is involved in sponsering a race team that is why I am asking for help. I also want some oversite of the funds from more than just me. In otherwords I want this done right.

Bert, do you think maybe as folks get on board and things start to shift into the brainstorm phase and what not we should have a sub-forum on it for discussion purposes?

Well, it's a little late in this season, but hey Kerry, NRHS can help you out a bit on parts and especially services if you're interested.

I prefer to keep it informal. I don't know how much help you've accepted from folks in the past, but man, sponsorship can be a double edged sword, choose who you let help you carefully. To some people, if they help you out they think they own you. Been there, done that, and believe me, when racing gets to be too much of a business a lot of the fun goes away. I find I much prefer to just accept a little informal help here and there from people I trust. Couple cylinders from Axtell, some valvetrain stuff and pistons from our suppliers, etc. Keeps things simple.

Wow , folks this support ,both financially and morale support is very welcome...racing as a privateer along side guys with sponsor lists too long to print and highly specialized drag bikes is disconcerting sometimes. Now I will go forward with the heart warming knowledge that people are behind me and obviously finances help too. But Seriuosly the thought that you folks are making my racing a priority is a great feeling. I am a generous person and can truly say this is a first time someone has offered to take care of something for me like this. I AM VERY TOUCHED.
I will carry the XLFORUM banner to the race and year end banquet. I need a high rez jpg or bmp of the logo ASAP for a couple race shirts!
It is late in the season and when its over ,however it ends ,it will have been a dream come true.
I will attempt to right up a nice summary of the season.Trying and put the feelings to words will be beyond my payscale...but I will give it a try.
And as far as the decision being late in the season...well I am poking around right now and seeing whether a new dream is feasible for next year....This year I am winning a class against dedicated drag bikes with only my street licensed XL with edelbrocks nitrous helping out. But As the year nears it s end I am thinking about how well a no bars extended swingarm XL can do in the very high profile street bike shootout class? HMMmmm... Thanks again so much for the financial support and also the cumalative "PAT ON THE BACK" as I prepare for the biggest race of the year.
Kerry.

Aaron thanks for the wise words. I have never been sponsored or helped out much ,but I am not too proud to ask and of course say thanks. No one will own the program...thats for sure and i have not sensed any problems with that angle from the emails I have recieved. Your offer is very kind and I will definetily need your help with large displacement xl mods. Thanks a ton.

Well only one week left till the final and deciding race. The CMDRA did a short story on what to watch for in the final race and our cless with its two racers tied going in is gonna make for an exciting race. saturday we will qualify with 1st getting 8 points,2nd getting 7 3rd getting 6 and so. So the tie will be broken by qualifying. Its my desire to qualify ahed of the second place racer. To be one point ahead will mean if we both go out in the 1/4 or semi finals at the same time...the point lead from qualifying will hold....imagine winning by one point!
Qualifying first will ensure me the point lead and either a bye or an easy first round...so thats the target...1st qualifier.....
With the small point lead that qualifying ahead would bring...a rain out for the sunday finals would have me ahead by a point...a lousy way to go , but the point is "QUALIFYING POSITION MAY WELL DECIDE WHO WINS THE YEAR!"

just realized I never replied to his thread at the year end. Most of the regulars here know what happend , but newer visitors would need to have an end to the story..
Brought that trailer back from the final race full of trophies....it came down to the final season ending race as there was a tie for first place going itno that race. The two of us tied for first met in the emi final race ,so the whole season came down to whoever won that run....it was so close that I was unable to tell who won till someone gave me the thumbs up on the return road....a rush of emotions...I never had actually figured it could happe.
So I brought back the Canadian motorcycle drag race associations supergas championship ,and as a complete surprise I was honored with the 2005 seasons rookie of the year award!. So thats the ending to the story....but like they say...a happy ending is only a story that hasnt really finished yet. There will be next year...and this forum has supported me with money and thats great, but let me tell you...the encouragement is AS IMPORTANT. You see doing this when you arent wealthy means deciding to do it when maybe you shouldnt....but you do it...or at least last year I did. The encouragement needs to be there during the periods of doubt and second guessing...and the many times last year I asked myself...what the hell am I doing here with a street bike???
So thanks to the XL forum for all the support. Heres the pic of how much room I had to leave in the trailer....they are proudly on display in my office now.
Best regards . Kerry. Narley racing.

Thank you for the support...and truly ...yes it takes money...no surprise...but last year the season nearly ended several times not from a lack of funds as much as from DOUBT! Why am I here...what am I doing on a street bike...who the hell do I think I am?
Encouragement as well as a few dollars are what I need. This year the class will require me to ride in the mid to high 9 second range...it will require me to lay out a few more bucks to get even faster...but the problem is that there is a threshold for what a Harley based engine and stock frame can handle...and we are banging right on that door. I am fortunate to be able to cover most of my costs,(last year we had no breaks) and Bert and NHRS have been awesome with their aid with both money and more horsepower from NHRS. But simply...if while banging on the threshold of what the bike can do We have a serious break then I am gonna need help.... while I am pouring more money into the repairs ...money that will exceed my budget I am gonna need encouragement...the doubts will be a crushing blow...knowing that a street sporty cant really handle 9.6 second quarter mile runs is going to make me question the season and my validity in pursuing these speeds. Just like last year when in the beggining of the season I was way off the mark and edelbrock helped me to shave 3 tenths of a second of my time. (in drag racing thats a ton). I dont think this year we will be off the mark , I think we will be right there. Nallins is putting together some killer heads that should give me loads of power. So I am excited, But I am also a realist. I recognize that we are really pushing it for next year...I am optimistic....to a fault. And I dont want to sound like a whiner...I know what I have just type may not seem like the mindset of a seasoned racer....But It is the truth...the mind is "as huge of an obstacle" in racing as any other issue that can ruin your season. SO IN CONCLUSION>>>>LAST YEARS SUPPORT WAS VERY TIMELY AND YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT TRULY HELPS KEEP ME GOING.
We wont dissapoint you fellow XL owners.
Best Regards . Kerry

Kerry,

Right now what I can offer you is encouragement to keep on going! I didn't know that you were fronting everything. I enjoy reading about your wins and experiences. I get to learn about what Sportys can do and the wild man who makes them go so fast! But what I really enjoy (now that I know you are doing it on your own dime) is knowing that there is someone who is making his dreams come true and is doing a damn fine job of it! To me, this is what having a Sportster is all about. Taking on the odds and beating them. I appreciate what you provide us here on the XLForum, thank you.

I bet you would like a bike that hits the rev limiter from 1st to 2nd so fast you cant foot shift to keep it from hitting the limiter...then again from 2nd to 3rd it bumping off the 7000 limiter before you can react....
Wow...that was a good time today as i was clearing the fog out of my brain while testing the bike on an unused strip of road at a closed border crossing....she is fast .

Narley
15th June 2006, 00:05
Well....the first race is behind us and I have been slow to report on it. A fellow racer showed up to run in our supergas class on a vrod. Seee, the problem is that our class is a vtwin pushrod class. Of course as I have learned ,you take your problem up with the person....first...tehn next with a 3rd party (and a copy of the rules) then lastly with the law. Tech directors cleared it up for him and he was of course dq'd....I would not have taken it to the officials at all except that he said he had already cleared it with them and so I went to them saying....wth? why wasnt this rule change shared with the rest of us....ends up they hadnt heard squat about it yet.
So now they were aware of it the discusion with the ravcer followed shortly after...I dint want that.. I wanted tech to just dissallow the bike, but now it was seen as me bitching...so the guy got a hate on for me and had me reteched and then eventually disqualified over a test and tune past sunday am that I wasnt supposed to take . My fault for leaving the door open for him to have something to quibble over. So the dq saw me out.....too bad because the test and tune run I took was the fastest run of the day for my class....a win was in the mix. IT WAS AN 1/8th mile race...the years only one....
So now thats all behind us, except that after the dq I entered the non qualifiers shootout for some seat time and had a botoom end problem. the pinion gear key slipped and the engine came to a halt...the cams spun out of time and the ignition was no longer picking up its needed signal and it ruined the redshift cams. SO a DQ and an expensive break....all in the first race....REMEMBER those first race emotions and doubts I spoke of that nearly crippled me last year....well imagine the feelings this time...the what the hell am I doing doubts.....WELL they were short lived this time....sure the repairs were gonna be about 2000 bucks but the anger over the way I was dq was so strong It pushed the doubts to the side and replaced them with an indignation and a fire toget to the next race and kick A$$.....
So half the years budget is gone on the first race , but I am dieing to get out there again.....
A 13-14 hour drive...leaving at 4 am tommorow....bringing back some trophies.

Wow, Bert, thanks.
the parts I need are new pinion gear and new flywheels, But we want the older style pinion shaft...so for the power we decided on s&s for their supreme rods and well designed pinion shaft and gear. I need new cases, ..they arent really a need ,but at nearly 160 hp...they are a wise idea. So again we need the s$s cases. No thats not a typo...s&s might as well be spelled s$s.
The motor will be in pieces for our inspection tommorow so I can post more then. Thanks again.

Narley
21st June 2006, 17:06
okay back from race #2. On a loner bike as the cases were too damaged to finish the sporty. Travelled 15-16 hours just to get my show and first round points. Two bad results is showing me down in the points a way, but I can make it up.
The races are trashed and the parts from S$S are ordered from the good guys and a gal at NRHS. But they wont be in time...so we will try to bandage the cases and pinion gear becasue I need to bring a nine second bike( the lonaer at the last race pulled mid 12's). A a back up I will bring a cool loaner bike this time. an S$S 124 turbo charged !!!.
So lets hope we can piece the sporty back together and that the new parts make it for the following ( race 4 of 6) race so I can finally kick some arse.
I also noticed the pay pal address was tough to read ...its kerry underscore lockhart@telus.net the underscore _ was hard to see. Thanks for all the support guys and gals.
