View Full Version : Speed-o-meter and 29T sprocket ....
gamhill 5th January 2005, 02:17 As part of my 883/1200 upgrade I hade planned on replacing the front sprocket with a 29T. Since the speedo "reads" the rpm from the main gear in the transmission, the larger sprocket should make the speedo read slower. Is there a way to adjust the speedo?
skooter 5th January 2005, 02:31 If your running a pre-2004 sporty all you have to do is replace your speedo sending unit with one off a 1200 because the 1200 came using a 29 tooth counter sprocket from the factory. You can probably find a used one somewhere. Check and see but I'm sure the sending units are the same from at least '97 to '03. Possibly even further back. My bike is a '97 and it came with a 29 tooth stock so my sending unit might work with your speedo and get your speed reading properly
Moved On 5th January 2005, 03:39 I've seen speedo calibration units at places like DragSpecialties and Custom Chrome that alloe you to tweek the value that goes to your speedo. I can't remember how much they cost probably in the $100 to $150 range?

longrun-pa 11th January 2005, 11:34 After doing the 883/1200 conversion, I put a 29T pulley on to lower the RPMs. The speedo only changed a couple miles per hour.
LVBOATDOC 11th January 2005, 13:57 [B]When you changed your front sprocket to the 29 did you have to change the belt or will the belt adjuster allow enough to use the old belt.
Just for grins, I remember when you purchased chrome chains for your bikes and was able to use the let overs for a belt to hold up yer baggy ass britches.
Myke 11th January 2005, 20:37 I changed over to a 29 tooth on my 95 a couple of weeks ago and the belt fit fine.

:laugh That has me rolling.... great post :clap
longrun-pa 14th January 2005, 11:29 There was plenty of adjustment for the belt on an '02 when changing to 29T. Probably could have gone to a 31 and not had to change belts.
chipdog4 14th January 2005, 13:41 I have discovered that 883's speedometers read faster. This is true on my bike and my brother's. Whenever we ride with our dad or a friend, our trip resets always read about 5 miles more on a 100 miles trip as well as.
Someone on the old forum said that it was because the motor company used the same magnetic pick up on 883's and 1200's, so if you switch to a 29 tooth sprocket, it will read right on.
Stephen Hawk 14th January 2005, 15:21 I did the exact opposite with a 2004 1200R and went from 29 to 28, the standard gear for the 883. I didn't have to change the belt and the speedo reads the same as it did before I changed the gear. It reads 6 mph fast at 65.

E00i3 19th February 2007, 05:40 Anyone know what a 29T sprocket goes for?
Thanks,
Mattbastard 19th February 2007, 15:33 There's one on ebay right now. I got mine for $25
FYI, My 96 883-1200 has the 29T front pulley and when paced by a Buick, it reads 8 mph slow at 60.
jssport 19th February 2007, 18:45 There are different speedometers for the 29 and 27 tooth sprocket, The pickups are the same. The dealer can order you a new 29 tooth spec speedometer and have it delivered preset with milelage off your your old 27 tooth sprocket speedo.
At about 70mph 5th gear, there's about 400 rpm difference between the 27/29 sprockets
Gone 21st February 2007, 10:51 My speedometer will sometimes zing up to 90 or 95 when I am on it wide open like in a drag race. And I know I am really only doing 84 mph. That is what I was clocked at the drag strip in 1/8th mile. I don't think they are very accurate meters.
